 (d)  Chips:
 1)  Spall (Shell Type) chips have a circular or rounded outer edge. There are many small ridges that follow the shape of the outer edge. The ridges become smaller at the center, or the deepest point of the chip, similar to a clamshell.
 2)  Vee shaped chips have a sharp "V" shape and apparently move into the plastic.
 (e)  Delamination (in-plane crack): A smooth surfaced crack, or a number of cracks, parallel to the window pane surface. An in-plane crack can occur in stretched acrylic and starts at the edges of the pane. A delamination can also occur because of a damaged pane. You can find a delamination from the reflection of the light from the smooth surfaces of the crack. 1) The procedure used to make acrylic panes, causes a lower
shear strength parallel to the pane surface than that perpendicular to the surface. Because of this, the acrylic acts as a lamination. A delamination is a separation of adjacent layers parallel to the pane surface. It can be induced by a blow with a sharp instrument on the pane edge and usually accompanies deep penetrations into the pane surface. Fine, continous delaminations are specified as crazing.
 2)  Large delaminations in the routed radius are more dangerous than a crazing. This is because the procedure used to make the pane, decreases the ability of the acrylic to resist delaminations parallel to the direction of stretching.
 3)  The peripheral seal on the outer pane can help prevent damage which can cause a delamination. If you find delaminations in the routed radius, examine the window frame for sharp points and the general fit of the pane in the frame.

 (a)  Surface crazing in the outer pane is permitted if it is in these limits and not at the routed edge:
NOTE: It is not easy to measure the depth of a crazing but
____ this procedure gives the approximate depth. Hold a scale perpendicular to the surface where the crazing is the deepest. View the scale at an approximately 45 degree angle. Multiply the apparent depth by two to get the actual depth (Fig. 601).
 1) A crazing with a 0.060 inch maximum depth in an area less than 2 inches in diameter. 2) A crazing with a 0.050 inch maximum depth along the full surface of the window.
