A 737-300/400/500MAINTENANCE MANUAL
MAGNETIC STANDBY COMPASS - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
________________________________________________
1. General_______
A. This procedure has three tasks. The first two tasks are different procedures that are used to do a swing of the standby magnetic compass. One procedure is to tow the airplane around a compass rose (Tow-Around Procedure). The other procedure is to use a standby compass calibrator (Calibrator Procedure). Use only one of these procedures to do a swing of the standby compass.
NOTE: The calibrator procedure cannot be used on airplanes with a
____
stowable standby compass.
Air bubbles can occur in the standby magnetic compass because of temperature and/or decrease of liquid . Maintenance limits made for liquid quantity make sure of satisfactory compass operation. When air bubble is larger than 3/8-inch wide and 1/8-inch high , with the glass approximately vertical position, replace the standby compass.
(1)
It is not necessary to keep a constant radius or tangency during airplane tow around the compass rose or the swing area. Tow direction is optional. These make no difference when you calculate the solutions.
(2)
Park no vehicles less than 220 feet from the airplane during the compass swing.
(3)
Make sure the radio receivers are on during the compass swing.
(4)
You can use the APU during the compass swing.
B. The other task is to remove the magnetic field from the strut assembly of the nose landing gear. If lightning hits the nose landing gear, it can cause a strong magnetic field in the strut assembly. This can cause a large error in the standby compass indication.
(1)
It is usually possible to find a magnetic field with a small compass held in the hand.
(2)
Use a degausser to remove a magnetic field from the strut assembly of the nose landing gear.
