 Install the spherical bearing (8). Make sure that the spherical bearing housing aligns correctly with the projection on the slat rib.

 (c)
 Install the new tab washer (7) and the new nut (6).

 (d)
 TORQUE the nut (6) to between 1.2 and 1.5 m.daN (106.19 and

 132.74 lbf.in). Make sure that you can safety the nut (6) with the tab washer (7).

 (e)
 Safety the nut (6) with the tab washer (7).

 (f)
 Apply a bead of SEALANTS (Material No. 09-016) to the nut (6), the tab washer (7) and the adjacent slat structure. Make sure that the sealant does not go onto the internal surfaces of the spherical bearing (8).

 Installation of the spherical bearing (5) at the position B

 (a)
 Apply SEALANTS (Material No. 09-013) to the mating surfaces of the spherical bearing (5) and the slat structure. Make sure that the sealant does not go onto the internal surfaces of the spherical bearing (5).

 (b)
 Install the spherical bearing (5). Make sure that the spherical bearing housing aligns correctly with the projection on the slat rib.

 (c)
 Install the new tab washer (4) and the new nut (3).

 (d)
 TORQUE the nut (3) to between 1.2 and 1.5 m.daN (106.19 and

 132.74 lbf.in). Make sure that you can safety the nut (3) with the tab washer (4).

 (e)
 Safety the nut (3) with the tab washer (4).

 (f)
 Apply a bead of SEALANTS (Material No. 09-016) to the nut (3), the tab washer (4) and the adjacent slat structure. Make sure that the sealant does not go onto the internal surfaces of the spherical bearing (5).

 SLAT 5 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1. General

 The slat 5 is installed on slat-tracks 11 and 12. These connect to the leading edge fixed structure adjacent to the wing tip. It is one of five slats which are extended or retracted to give the correct lift to the aircraft.
 2. Description
___________
 The slat 5 is a wedge-shaped structure. It has:

 -
a main rivetted structure

 -
a trailing edge structure


 -slat-tracks 11 and 12(Ref. 27-84-00)
 -attachments for the wing anti-icing system (Ref. 30-11-00).
 3. Component Description
_____________________
 A. Main Rivetted Structure
 The main rivetted structure is made of ribs and a spar, a top skin and an
 etched bottom skin.
 The ribs are of two types:

 -inboard and outboard end ribs, two track ribs, and a hold-down rib, all machined from aluminum alloy
 -in four positions, a nose rib forward of the spar and an intermediate
 rib behind it. These are each made from C-section aluminum alloy sheet. A hold-down bracket and bolt are attached to the hold-down rib. When the slats retract fully, the bolt touches a stop on the fixed leading edge of the wing.
 There are rubbing blocks attached to the end ribs at the inboard and the
 outboard ends.

 The top skin is made from aluminum alloy sheet. It has a finger strip
 bonded to its inner face to add strength.
 Two reversible hoisting lugs are installed on the top skin.

 The bottom skin is made from an etched aluminum alloy sheet. There are
 two drain holes in the bottom skin, and 42 exhaust holes for the
 anti-icing system. Two buffers are attached to the bottom skin. They
 touch the fixed leading edge of the wing when the slats retract.
