SLAT 1 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
__________________________________
 1. General
_______ R (Ref. Fig. 001, 002)
The slat 1 is installed on slat-tracks 1 thru 4. These connect to the leading edge fixed structure inboard of the engine. It is one of five slats which are extended or retracted to give the correct lift to the aircraft.
 2. Description
___________
The slat 1 is a wedge-shaped structure. It has:

 -
a main rivetted structure

 -
a trailing edge structure

 -slat-tracks 1 thru 4 (Ref. 27-84-00).
 3. Component Description
_____________________
 A. Main Rivetted Structure The main rivetted structure is made of ribs, a top skin and an etched bottom skin. The ribs are of two types:
 -
the outboard end rib and track ribs, machined from aluminum alloy

 -
the inboard end rib and seven intermediate ribs, made from C-section

aluminum alloy sheet. The top skin is made from aluminum alloy sheet. It has a bonded finger strip, and a stringer made from pressed aluminum alloy sheet, to add strength. Two reversible hoisting lugs are installed on the top skin.
The bottom skin is made from an etched aluminum alloy sheet. There are 12
drain holes in the bottom skin.
A lower girder, made from pressed aluminum alloy sheet, adds strength to
the structure. It makes the forward joint of the top and bottom skins.
There are seals attached to the rear face of the slat:

-at the outboard end of the slat

 -around the tracks

-near the forward joint of the top and bottom skins.
Elbow pieces reinforce the seals at each corner.
There is a glass fiber belly-fairing attached with bolts to the inboard
 end of the structure.

 B. Trailing Edge Structure
The slat 1 has a trailing edge structure which is attached to the main rivetted structure at the rear spar. It closes the aft edge of the slat and completes the aerodynamic profile.

The trailing edge is a bonded structure of aluminum alloy panels with a honeycomb core.
 C. Slat Tracks
The slat 1 is connected to slat-tracks 1 thru 4 which are made from curved steel forgings.
Slat-tracks 2 and 3 each have a rack attached by bolts to the bottom face. Pinions on the slat-track actuators turn to move the racks and thus extend or retract the slat.
Slat-tracks 1 and 4 do not have a rack, but give the slat 1 strength when it is extended or retracted. Fixed stops at the ends of all the slat-tracks limit the travel of the slat.
The slat-tracks are connected to the track ribs of slat 1 with bolts, nuts and titanium alloy links. A closing plate and self-aligning bearings are attached to the forward end of each slat-track. Eccentric bushes are installed in the slat-track ribs for adjustment of the slat.
