3. Component Description

A. Main Rivetted Structure
The main rivetted structure is made of ribs and a spar, a top skin and an
etched bottom skin.
The ribs are of two types:
-inboard and outboard end ribs, two track ribs, a hold-down rib and a closing rib. These are all machined from aluminum alloy.
-in four positions, a nose rib forward of the spar and an intermediate
rib behind it. These are each made from C-section aluminum alloy sheet. A hold-down bracket and bolt are attached to the hold-down rib. When the slat retracts fully, the bolt touches a stop on the fixed leading edge of the wing.
There is a rubbing block attached to the outboard end rib.
The top skin is made from aluminum alloy sheet. It has a bonded finger
strip, and a stringer, which add strength.
Two reversible hoisting lugs are installed on the top skin.
The bottom skin is made from an etched aluminum alloy sheet. There are
two drain holes in the bottom skin, and 40 exhaust holes for the
anti-icing system. Two buffers are attached to the bottom skin. They
touch the leading edge of the wing when the slats retract.

Two girders, made from pressed aluminum alloy sheet, add strength to the structure and join the top and bottom skins to the spar. The top girder is corrugated to let air from the anti-icing system flow through to the bottom skin.
There are seals attached to the rear face of the slat:
-at the inboard end of the slat
-around the tracks
-near the forward joint of the top and bottom skins.
Elbow pieces reinforce the seals at each corner.
A weather-seal strip closes the area between slat 3 and slat 4 (Ref. 57-45-00). It is installed in parallel channels attached to the rear face of the top skin of the slats.
B. Trailing Edge Structure
The slat 3 has a trailing edge structure which is attached to the main rivetted structure at the rear spar. It closes the aft edge of the slat and completes the aerodynamic profile.
The trailing edge is a bonded structure of aluminum alloy panels with a honeycomb core.
C. Slat Tracks
The slat 3 is connected to slat-tracks 7 and 8. Each slat-track is made from a curved steel forging and has a rack attached by bolts to its bottom face. A pinion in the slat-track actuator turns to move the rack and thus extends or retracts the slat. Fixed stops at the ends of the slat-track limit the travel of the slat.
The slat-tracks are connected to the track ribs of slat 3 with bolts, nuts and titanium alloy links. A closing plate and self-aligning bearings are attached to the forward end of each slat-track. Eccentric bushes are installed in the slat-track ribs for adjustment of the slat.
D. Attachments for the Wing Anti-icing System
A piccolo tube, with a welded plate and angle mountings, is attached to the slat, near the inboard end. It connects to the telescopic duct which is installed on the fixed leading edge of the wing. The inboard end contour of the slat lets the telescopic duct move when the slat is extended or retracted. The slat top girder is corrugated to let air from the piccolo tube flow through the exhaust holes in the bottom skin. The piccolo tube goes through the ribs to the outboard end of the slat. A flexible hose connects it to the inboard end of the slat 4.
