SLAT 2 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
__________________________________
1. General
_______ R (Ref. Fig. 001, 002)
The slat 2 is installed on slat-tracks 5 and 6. These connect to the leading edge fixed structure immediately outboard of the engine. It is one of five slats which are extended or retracted to give the correct lift to the aircraft.
2. Description
___________
The slat 2 is a wedge-shaped structure. It has:
-
a main rivetted structure
-
a trailing edge structure
-slat-tracks 5 and 6 (Ref. 27-84-00).
3. Component Description
_____________________
A. Main Rivetted Structure
The main rivetted structure is made up of ribs, a top skin and an etched
bottom skin.
The ribs are of two types:
-
the inboard and outboard end ribs, the two track ribs and the hold-down rib, all machined from aluminum alloy.
-
the closing rib and four intermediate ribs, made from C-section
aluminum alloy sheet. A hold-down bracket and bolt are attached to the hold-down rib. When the slat retracts fully, the bolt touches a stop on the fixed leading edge of the wing.
There is a rubbing block attached to the outboard end rib.
The top skin is made from aluminum alloy sheet. It has a bonded finger
strip, and a stringer, which add strength.
Two reversible hoisting lugs are installed on the top skin.
The bottom skin is made from an etched aluminum alloy sheet. There are
nine drain holes in the bottom skin.
A lower girder, made from pressed aluminum alloy sheet, adds strength to
the structure. It makes the forward joint of the top and bottom skins.
There are seals attached to the rear face of the slat:
-at the inboard end of the slat
-around the tracks

-near the forward joint of the top and bottom skins.
Elbow pieces reinforce the seals at each corner.
B. Trailing Edge Structure
The slat 2 has a trailing edge structure which is attached to the main rivetted structure at the rear spar. It closes the aft edge of the slat and completes the aerodynamic profile.
The trailing edge is a bonded structure of aluminum alloy panels with a honeycomb core.
C. Slat Tracks
The slat 2 is connected to slat-tracks 5 and 6. Each slat-track is made from a curved steel forging and has a rack attached by bolts to its bottom face. A pinion on the slat-track actuator turns to move the rack and thus extends or retracts the slat. Fixed stops at the ends of the slat-track limit the travel of the slat.
The slat-tracks are connected to the track ribs of slat 2 with bolts, nuts and titanium alloy links. A closing plate and self-aligning bearings are attached to the forward end of each slat-track. Eccentric bushes are installed in the slat-track ribs for adjustment of the slat.
