R  **ON A/C 401-499,
R  A. Generator Control Unit
R  The 2 GCUs are identical and interchangeable. The GCU functions (GCU1 and
R  GCU2) are selected by Pin Programming.
R  The GCU has four different functions:
R  - voltage regulation,
R  - frequency regulation,
R  - control and protection of the network and the generator,
R  - control of the various indications,
R  - system test and self-monitoring.
R  All these functions are performed in the digital form.
R  The GCUs are supplied:
R  - directly from the PMG, for generator excitation and 28VDC internal and
R  external supply,
R  - from the aircraft normal network (28 VDC) for the internal and external
R  supply.
R  This dual supply constitutes a back up supply.
R  (1) Voltage regulation
R  The voltage regulation is achieved by controlling the current through
R  the exciter field. The voltage is kept at nominal value (115 VAC) at
R  the Point of Regulation (POR).
R  The POR is located in the electrical power centre (120VU) at the end
R  of the generator feeder, upstream of the line contactor.
R  The principle of operation of the voltage regulator is by constant
R  frequency variable pulse width modulation of the voltage through the
R  exciter field.
R  (2) Regulation of the generator speed
R  The regulation of the generator speed is accomplished by means of a
R  servo valve located in the IDG. The GCU controls the servo valve
R  position. The operating principle is detailled in Ref. 24-21-00.

R  (3) Control and protective functions
R  The GCU controls the connection and disconnection of the power
R  provided by the generator to and from the aircraft electrical system.
R  This control is provided by means of 3 relays:
R  - the Generator Control Relay (GCR) which controls the generator
R  excitation,
R  - the Power Ready Relay (PRR) which controls the generator line
R  contactor and the FAULT warning light in the cockpit,
R  - the Servo Valve Relay (SRV) which controls the generator speed by
R  means of the servo valve.
R  (4) Generator control and protection functions
R  The following control or fault signals cause generator shutdown or
R  de-energization:
R  - No controlled Shutdown recognized upon power-up of the control unit
R  - Overvoltage Fault
R  - Undervoltage 1 Fault
R  - Undervoltage 2 Fault
R  - Overfrequency 1 Fault
R  - Overfrequency 2 Fault
R  - Overfrequency 3 Fault
R  - Underfrequency 1 Fault
R  - Underfrequency 2 Fault
R  - Underspeed
R  - Shorted Rotating Diode (PMG to chassis short) Fault
R  - Open Cable Fault
R  - Differential Protection Fault
R  - Overcurrent Fault
R  - Delta Overcurrent Fault
R  - Phase Sequence Fault with the Power Ready Relay "absent"
R  - Servo Valve Deterioration Fault
R  - Disconnect Trip Fault
R  - Welded GLC Fault
R  - GLC Control Circuit Fault
R  - Shorted/Open PMG Fault with the Power Ready Relay "absent"
R  - Pin Programming Error detected on GCU power-up.
R  The generator shall be "reset" when the protective faults
R  (identified above) are still not present and one of the following
R  occurs:
R  - Cold Start (which is defined as POWER-UP RESET or the application
R  of 28 volts to the control unit) occurs,
R  - Generator Control Switch (GCS) is toggled (OFF to ON).
R  The following functions shall be limited to a total of 2 resets
R  after which a cold start will be requuired for reset:
R  - Overvoltage Fault
