Ignition
A. DescriptionandOperation
The spark ignitionsystemconsistsof an ignition excitermountedon aft engine mountassembly, two
high tension cableassemblies, andtwo sparkigniters. The exciter is a sealed unitconsistingof electroniccomponentsencased by an epoxyresin. Whenenergized,a capacitor in the unit is progressivelychargeduntil it reaches a predetermined value, when the energy storedis sufficient to ionize a spark gap in the unit anddischargethe capacitor acrosstwo sparkigniters. The designof the systempermitsoperationof one sparkigniterif the otherstops functioning.
The high tensioncableassembliescarry an electricalchargefrom ignition exciter to sparkigniters. Thecablesconsistof an electrical leadcontainedin a flexible metal braiding, withcouplingnuts on each end and mountingflangesfor attachment to engine fire seals.
Thesparkignitersarelocated at the 4 and 9 o'clock positionson the gasgeneratorcase adjacent to fuel manifold. The ignitersareenergizedduring engine startingsequenceand during auto modewhen torquefallsbelow 400 foot-poundsto initiatecombustionin combustionchamber.

~WARNING: HIGH. USE EXTREME
VOLTAGE IN IGNITION EXCITER CAN BE DANGEROUSLY CAUTION WHEN WORKING AROUND THIS SYSTEM. ENSURE IGNITION IS SWITCHED OFF AND SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE FOR AT LEAST SIX MINUTES, BEFOREREMOVING IGNITION COMPONENTS. ALWAYS USE INSULATED TOOLS TO REMOVE CABLE COUPLING NUTS. DO NOT TOUCH OUTPUT CONNECTORS OR COUPLING NUTS WITH BARE HANDS. ALWAYS DISCONNECT COUPLING NUTSAT IGNITION EXCITER END FIRST.
CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW LUBRICANT TO CONTACT CONDUCTOROF CONNECTORS WHICH COULD RESULT IN HIGH RESISTANCEPATH, GENERATING HEAT AND OXIDATION.
NOTE: Refer to Pratt and WhitneyMaintenanceManual, p/n 3034342, Chapter 74 for additional informationon the ignition system.
