OXYGEN - SERVICING (GASEOUS)

1. General_______
A. These tasks are in this procedure:
(1)
Servicing of the supernumerary oxygen system (cylinder replacement)
(2)
Servicing of the crew oxygen system (cylinder replacement)
B. To do the portable oxygen servicing replace the portable oxygen cylinders with cylinders that are fully serviced. Refer to AMM 35-31-00/001, Portable Oxygen Equipment for the location of the portable oxygen cylinders.
C. The oxygen cylinders for the supernumerary and crew oxygen systems are located in the forward cargo compartment right hand sidewall, aft of the cargo door. Access is through the right hand cargo sidewall panels (Fig. 301 and 302).
D. You can use composite and steel cylinders at the same time in the same cylinder support structure.
E. Oxygen Requirements:
(1) Gaseous oxygen for airplane uses must not have less than 99.5% oxygen by volume. You must keep the system free of toxic contaminations to the maximum extent that is possible. Moisture content must not go above 0.005 milligram of water vapor to every liter of gas. This is at a temperature of 70°F and a pressure of 760 millimeters of mercury. Oxygen within Specification MIL-O-27210, Type I, must have these conditions and it is also recommended. All exceptions or additional steps must be done with a moisture content that is within S.A.E. (AS 1065).
F. Safety Precautions:
(1) Read and obey the safety precautions and general instructions before you do the maintenance (AMM 35-00-00/201).
WARNING: KEEP ALL OXYGEN COMPONENTS, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT FREE OF
_______ PETROLEUM BASED OILS, GREASES, HYDRAULIC FLUID, AND OTHER CONTAMINATION. THESE MATERIALS CAN MIX WITH THE OXYGEN AND CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION. FIRES OR EXPLOSIONS WILL CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.
(2) Make sure that hands, clothing, tools, servicing area, and servicing equipment are clean. They must also be free of petroleum products, other oils and greases, hydraulic fluid, or dirt before you service the oxygen system.

Keep the oxygen away from all sources of ignition (hot exhausts, sparks, flame, smoking, or flammable items).
(4)
Do not let the oxygen to mix with other gases, fumes, or flammable materials.
(5)
Use only aviation breathing grade oxygen.
(6)
Do not use welding oxygen or hospital-grade oxygen. This oxygen is not controlled for contamination and moisture.
