D. Prepare for the Procedure

(1) If the ambient temperature is less than 0 degree Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), do this task: Cold Weather Maintenance (AMM 12-33-01/301).
NOTE: Supply heat before you drain the sumps to make sure the fuel

drains freely.

Permit the water to go to the bottom of the tank before you open the sump drain valve.

If it is necessary to get a fuel sample from the center wing tank sump, open access doors 191G and 192G.
E. Sump the Main, Center and Reserve Tanks

Put the top end of the receptacle assembly against the sump drain poppet.
(2)
Put the container below the sump drain valve.

(3) Push up until the fluid flows into the container.
NOTE: If you can not open the sump drain valve or fluid does not
____ drain from the valve, water around the valve or in the valve can be frozen. Do the applicable cold weather maintenance (AMM 12-33-01/301).

Drain each sump until the container is full.

Remove the sample container from the sump and permit the valve to close.

Look at the fuel in the container.

If the fuel in the container has visible water (free water), do these steps:
(a)
Empty the fuel from the container.
(b)
Use the correct procedures to dispose of the fuel.
(c)
Continue to drain fuel from the sump drain until all of the free water is removed.

(8) If the water in the fuel sample container has a foul odor or a brown color, do this task: Detection Test for Microbial Contamination (AMM 28-11-00/701).

CAUTION: IF YOU FIND THAT THE FUEL HAS A RED OR A PINK COLOR, DO THE
_______ APPLICABLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE FUEL IS NOT CONTAMINATED. DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.

If you see red dye in the fuel, do this task: Clean the Fuel Tanks Contaminated with Red Dye (AMM 28-11-00/701).
