(c)
Push the outboard ring down the tool jaws until it stops.
(d)
Make sure the vees of the inboard ring point away from the tool and push the inboard ring on the tool jaws.
(e)
Push the inboard ring down the tool jaws until it stops.
(f)
Hold the tool with the ring end up.
(g)
Turn the wormshaft in the COMPRESS direction (clockwise) until the tool jaws lightly hold the rings.
(h)
Make sure the two rings are fully against the ring stops on the tool.
(i)
Make sure that the distance between the rings at the 3 o'clock position and the 9 o'clock position (distances A and B on Fig. 404, View A) is 1.200 | .020 inches.
NOTE: The two measurements must be the same | 0.010 inch.
____
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN THE WORMSHAFT AFTER THE PEG TOUCHES THE STOP.
_______
TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
(j)
Turn the wormshaft in the COMPRESS direction (clockwise) until the peg touches the stop (Fig. 403, Sheet 2, View B).
(k)
Remove the T-handle ball pin (7, Fig. 404) from the tool.

(10) Install the in-axle mount rings:
CAUTION:_______DO NOT HIT THE AXLE WALL WITH THE FRICTION PADS. THE FRICTION PADS CAN CAUSE SCRATCHES WHERE CORROSION CAN START.
(a)
After you apply the primer, immediately push the tool with the rings into the axle.
(b)
Align the tool collar key (5, Fig. 404) with the axle keyway (2).
NOTE: If too much force is necessary to insert the tool, the
____ cause can be too much green primer inside the axle.
(c) Turn by hand the two cross bolts with the washers through the axle into the holes (4) in the tool collar directly opposite each other.
NOTE: Use MS16997-43 and MS15795-810 or their equivalent if
____ the axle nut is not in its position.
(d) Make sure the top of the gear box (6) is level.
1) Use the T-handle ball pin (7) on the side of the tool gear box to make the box level.
NOTE:____The ball pin can be in two positions. Look at the gear box and the strut to see if the gear box is level. If it is not level, remove the T-pin, turn the box, and install the pin in the other position. The top of the box must be perpendicular to the landing gear strut.
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN THE WORMSHAFT AFTER THE PEG TOUCHES THE STOP.
_______ TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
(e) Turn the wormshaft in the EXPAND direction (counterclockwise) until the peg touches the stop (Fig. 403, Sheet 2, View A).
NOTE: During this step the torque that is necessary to turn
____ the wormshaft will decrease and then increase.
(f) Turn the wormshaft in the COMPRESS direction (clockwise) until you can turn the shaft easily by hand (approximately 1-1/2 turns).
