 (6)  S 394-049Apply a bead of sealant, BMS5-95 to the edge of the discharger base. (a) Make a fillet seal around the discharger base (AMM 51-31-00/201). (b) Make sure no cracks are seen, this includes airplane sufaces that do not correctly align with the base. (c) Clean away unwanted sealant with a cloth that is moist with methyl ethyl ketone , BMS 11-7, FCC-55, MEK:sec-butyl alcohol (42:58), or MPK.

 (7)  Examine the installation of the discharger base:
 (a)  Make sure that there are no cracks in the sealant, BMS 5-95. 1) If you find a crack, fill the crack with sealant BMS 5-95.

 WARNING:_______MAKE SURE THAT THE BONDING METER IS RESISTANT TO EXPLOSION. IF NOT, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AN EXPLOSION OR FIRE CAN OCCUR.
 (8)  Use a bonding meter to do a check of the electrical bond between the discharger base and the airplane surface (SWPM 20-20-00).
 (a)  The resistance for new discharger bases must not be more than the values that follow. 1) .01 ohms for dischargers installed on metal panels. 2) .10 ohms for dischargers installed on fiberglass laminate
 or composite panels with a cover of aluminum flame spray. a) Also dischargers installed on aluminum-covered glass fabric. 3) 1.0 ohm for dischargers installed on composite panels without a cover of aluminum.
 NOTE: A resistance of more than these values can cause
____ damage if hit by lightning.

 4. Static Discharger Rod Installation

 A. General
 (1)  Before you install the new static discharger rod, do a check of the condition of the rod. Tips that show erosion are satisfactory if the tip shows and the resistant check is good.

 (c)  Tighten the setscrew.

 WARNING:_______USE THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW WHEN YOU USE A MEGOHMMETER. IF YOU DO NOT USE PRECAUTIONS, THEN IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AN EXPLOSION OR FIRE CAN OCCUR.
 (2)  Use these precautions for possible fuel vapors when you use a megohmmeter:
 (a)  
Use the Quadtech 1863 megohmmeter or equivalent meter with a 500 VDC test voltage and a maximum 5 milliampere short circuit current.

 (b)  
Do not use a megohmmeter at these locations: 1) Area adjacent to or below a wing fuel tank vent, five foot


 (1.524 meters) diameter column, from vent to ground.
 2)  Zero to 18 inches (457 mm) above the ground in the area around the airplane.
 (c)  Make sure that: 1) Area is well ventilated. 2) Metal workstands are grounded. 3) Megohmmeter is plugged into a grounded receptacle. 4) Megohmmeter is insulated from metal work stands.

 (3)  Use a megohmmeter to measure the resistance between the discharger rod and the base:
 NOTE: A good electrical bond between the discharger rod and the
____ megohmmeter is necessary for a correct measure of resistance.
 (a)  
Set the megohmmeter to 500 VDC test voltage.

 (b)  
Use a wet paper towel or cotton cloth to make a good connection with the end of the discharger rod.
