AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATIONS ADDRESSING AND REPORTING SYSTEM (ACARS) - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
_________________________________________________________________________________
1. General_______
A. There are two tasks in this procedure. The first task is the operational test of the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS). The second task is the system test.
B. The operational test is a minimum check of the basic ACARS and
Interactive Display Unit (IDU) operation.
C. The system test contains checks of all of the primary ACARS functions. The test includes checks of the OOOI sensor operation and of the VHF to the ACARS interface. The checks in the operational test are also in the system test.
D. When the ACARS cannot make a link with the ground station, the NOCOMM indicator will come on. This is usually not an indication of a system failure. One of these conditions will cause the NOCOMM indication:
(1)
The RF path between the VHF antenna and the ground station is blocked. It can help to move the airplane to a better position. You will connnect the VHF-1 antenna cable to the VHF-3 transceiver before the tests. The VHF-1 antenna is on the top of the airplane and will usually give the best results.
(2)
The VHF-3 system does not operate correctly (Ref 23-21-00/501).
(3)
The ground station has a problem. Tell them that you cannot make a link. If they have a problem, other airplanes that use the data link will also get NOCOMM indications.
