_______ (LEFT, RIGHT OR CENTER) DURING REPLACEMENT. THERE IS A CROSS-CONNECTION POSSIBILITY DURING INSTALLATION.
 (1) Do these steps to install the VHF communication control panel:
 (a)  
Remove the protective covers from the electrical connector.

 (b)  
Examine the electrical connector for bent or broken pins, dirt, and damage.

 (c)  
Connect the electrical connector on the rear of the control panel.

 (d)  
Set the VHF communication control panel in its position on the P8 panel.

 (e)  
Tighten the four quarter-turn fasteners on the front of the control panel.

 (2)  Remove the DO-NOT-CLOSE tags and close the circuit breaker for the VHF panel that you installed:
 (a)  
P6-1 Circuit Breaker Panel:
 1) VHF-2
 2) ELEX PANEL

 (b)  
P18-2 Circuit Breaker Panel:
 1) VHF-1
 2) VHF-3 (if installed)

 NOTE: You will close one circuit breaker at a time to do a check

 for a cross-connection.

 D. VHF Communication Control Panel Installation Test

 (1)  
Supply electrical power (AMM 24-22-00/201).

 (2)  
Use the new VHF communication control panel to set the applicable VHF communication system to a test frequency.

 (a)  Make sure the transmission and reception are satisfactory.

 (3)  Remove the DO-NOT-CLOSE tag and close the circuit breakers for one of the other VHF communication control panels:
 (a)  
P6-1 Circuit Breaker Panel:
 1) VHF-2
 2) ELEX PANEL

 (b)  
P18-2 Circuit Breaker Panel:
 1) VHF-1
 2) VHF-3 (if installed)

 (4)  Use the applicable VHF communication control panel to set the VHF communication system to a test frequency.
 (a)  Make sure the transmission and reception are satisfactory.

 (5)  Remove the DO-NOT-CLOSE tag and close the last circuit breaker for VHF communication control panels:
 (a)  P6-1 Circuit Breaker Panel:

General
_______
 A.  The Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) transmits and receives digital messages in conjunction with a ground station. Messages are transmitted by use of the VHF-3 transceiver. By automatically transmitting such data as departure station, destination, estimated time of arrival, crew payroll numbers, fuel, APU data and flight number, the crew workload is lessened. The ACARS system consists of management unit (MU) and control unit (CU).
