Procedure
S 324-051
(1) If is necessary to drill the installation holes in the static discharger base, then do these steps:
(a)
Use the used discharger base as a template to make marks for the hole locations on the new discharger base.
(b)
Drill and countersink the holes as necessary.
(c)
Make sure the dimensions of the holes are satisfactory for the fasteners.
(d)
Clean the discharger base with solvent, Series 80 (AMM 20-30-80/201).
(e)
Put the discharger base in the plastic container.

(2) Clean the area where the static discharger base will be installed:
(a) FOR AN ALUMINUM STRUCTURE; Do the steps that follow: 1) Remove the sealant with a sealant removal tool. 2) If it is necessary, do this procedure again until you
remove all the remaining sealant.

CAUTION: ONLY USE THE SOLVENT IN AN AREA WITH GOOD AIR FLOW.
_______ THE SOLVENT YOU USE IS FLAMMABLE.
3) Clean the area to be bonded with solvent, Series 92 (AMM 20-30-92/201). a) Apply the solvent with a clean gauze or cheesecloth.
4) Remove the solvent before it dries with more clean gauze or cheesecloth.
NOTE: Do not touch the surface.

5) Rub the surface with the 600-grit sandpaper. 6) Rub the surface until it is smooth and the bare metal is exposed.
NOTE: Change the sandpaper frequently.

CAUTION: INSTALL THE STATIC DISCHARGER BASE IN 5 MINUTES
_______ OR LESS AFTER THE AIRPLANE SURFACE AND THE STATIC DISCHARGER BASE SURFACE HAVE BEEN RUBBED WITH SANDPAPER. THIS IS TO PREVENT ALUMINUM OXIDATION.
7) Clean with a dry gauze or cheesecloth, do not use solvent.
FOR A COMPOSITE STRUCTURE;
Do the steps that follow:
CAUTION: DO NOT RUB THROUGH THE RESIN SURFACE AND INTO THE
_______ GLASS FABRIC. DO NOT USE CHEMICAL STRIPPERS. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE SURFACE.
1) Use the 180-grit sandpaper to remove the sealant.
NOTE: A surface 90% clear of sealant is satisfactory.

CAUTION: USE THE SOLVENT ONLY IN AN AREA WITH GOOD AIR FLOW.
_______ THE SOLVENT THAT YOU USE IS FLAMMABLE.
2) Clean the area to be bonded with the methyl ethyl ketone,
BMS 11-7, FCC-55, MEK:sec-butyl alcohol (42:58), or MPK. 3) Apply the solvent with the clean gauze or cheesecloth. 4) Remove the solvent before it dries with a clean gauze or
cheesecloth. 5) Make sure that the area is not dirty.
NOTE: To prevent contamination, bond less than one hour

after you cleaned the surface.

(3) S 034-038Remove the metal discharger base from the plastic container: (a) Do not touch the surface to be installed.
CAUTION:_______ INSTALL THE STATIC DISCHARGER BASE IN 5 MINUTES OR LESS AFTER THE AIRPLANE SURFACE AND THE STATIC DISCHARGER BASE SURFACE HAVE BEEN RUBBED WITH SANDPAPER. THIS IS TO PREVENT ALUMINUM OXIDATION.
(b) Rub the surface with 600-grit sandpaper.
NOTE:____ Do not rub plated bases with sandpaper. A plated base has a green circular mark for identification. Wear gloves to touch the bases.
(4) S 424-040Attach the base to the airplane surface: (a) Make sure you install the base in the same direction as the airstream.
(5) S 434-043Install the fasteners: (a) Attach the base to the aluminum structure in 5 minutes or less to prevent aluminum oxidation. 1) Use rivets to attach the base to the airplane surface (SRM 51-40-02). 2) Apply sealant, BMS5-95 to the rivet (AMM 51-31-00/201). (b) Attach the base to the composite structure. 1) Apply sealant, BMS5-95 to the screws (AMM 51-31-00/201). 2) Use the four 5/32 inch screws to attach the base to the structure.
