the Jeppesen charts in a format such as 24/F/C/Y/T, where:
• 24 is the PCN
• F is the type of pavement, where:
• R = Rigid
• F = Flexible
• C is the subgrade strength, where:
• D = Ultra Low (k = 20 / CBR = 3)
• C = Low (k = 40 / CBR = 6)
• B = Medium (k = 80 / CBR = 10)
• A = High (k = 150 / CBR = 15)
• Y is the tire pressure, where:
• W = High, no pressure limit
• X = Medium, limited to 217 psi
• Y = Low, limited to 145 psi
• Z = Very Low, limited to 73 psi

• T is the PCN classification, where:
• T = Technical Evaluation
• U = Aircraft Experience
B. Factors That Affect Classification Numbers:
There are several factors that must be considered in the use and
understanding of the results of the flotation analysis and the resulting
Aircraft Classification Numbers and Pavement Classification Numbers. The
following table lists the major parameters:
ACN PCN
Aircraft Gross Weight (Variable) Aircraft Gross Weight (Variable)
Landing Gear Geometry (Fixed) Landing Gear Geometry (Variable)
Allowable Pavement Stress (Fixed) Allowable Pavement Stress (Fixed)
Subgrade Strength Modulus (Variable) Pavement Thickness (Variable)
Pavement Thickness (Variable) Pavement Surface Material (Fixed)
Pavement Surface Material (Fixed) Subgrade Strength Modulus (Variable)
C. Analysis Parameter Values:
The following parameter values were used in this analysis:
Parameter Value
Aircraft Gross Weight 35,000 lb thru 80,000 lb
Landing Gear Geometry Dual Wheels
Allowable Pavement Stress 400 psi
Dual Wheel Spacing 15.75 in
Westergaard Mod (k)
(Same values as recorded in Airport
Directory section of JEPPESEN manual.)
20 (Ultra Low)
40 (Low)
80 (Medium)
150 (High)
California Bearing Ratio (CBR)*
(Same values as recorded in Airport
Directory section of JEPPESEN manual.)
3 (Very Low)
6 (Low)
10 (Medium)
15 (High)
D. GIV-SP ACN Values:
Subgrade Strength Flexible Pavement Rigid Pavement
Subgrade D 21 24
Subgrade C 22 25
Subgrade B 23 26
Subgrade A 24 27
(Based on 75,000 lb gross weight and 189 psi tire pressure.)
E. Non-SP GIV ACN Values:
Subgrade Strength Flexible Pavement Rigid Pavement

Subgrade Strength Flexible Pavement Rigid Pavement
Subgrade A 24 26
(Based on 73,600 lb gross weight and 175 psi tire pressure.)
F. Pavement Subgrade Conditions:
The subgrade conditions that are listed are those that are the default
conditions for the third party computer software and as such are
considered to be typical values. As noted, they also agree with the values
listed in the Airport Directory section of the Jeppesen Instrument Flight
Manual.
G. Pavement Subgrade Units:
The subgrade conditions are listed as the Westergaard modulus (k) and as
California Bearing Ratio (CBR). The value of (k) is the Westergaard’s
modulus of subgrade reaction in MN/m3 (Mega Newtons per cubic meter).
The value of CBR is the bearing ratio of soil determined by comparing the
penetration load of the soil to that of a standard material (crushed
limestone).
H. Rigid Pavement:
The calculations with the rigid pavement predictions for the GIV series
aircraft are based upon a pavement stress of 2.75 MPa (400 psi), and the
resulting number of allowable passes predicted as 10,000 used in
computer program No. 1. If other airport standards are being considered,
more information must be obtained from the airport authority for the airport
being considered.
I. Flexible Pavement:
The flexible pavement ACN numbers are calculated with computer
program No. 2 and are based upon the use of the California Bearing Ratio
for the subgrade modulus.
J. Effect of Tire Inflation:
Gulfstream Aerospace Engineering recommends that operating tire
pressures be adjusted for the proper inflation value for the expected
operating loads to obtain the best service lives for the tires and the
pavement. Based upon a fixed gross weight, adjusting tire pressures to a
higher pressure results in a higher ACN number; adjusting the tire
pressures to a lower value results in a lower ACN number.
