NOTE:
At water entry, expect the airplane attitude to be
approximately 7 to 8 degrees nose up. Airspeed at
water entry should be just above stall speed. This is to
minimize structural damage following water contact.

B. Life Rafts / Survival Equipment.................................................REMOVE
C. Airplane ............................................................ABANDON IMMEDIATELY
When airplane comes to a complete stop, pull both Fire Handles, remove
life rafts and any other survival equipment, and abandon airplane
immediately. Use all available exits if necessary but, if possible, do not
open main entrance door or aft baggage compartment door as their door
sills may be below water line.
11. Airplane ...............................................................EXPECT TO REMAIN AFLOAT
The airplane may be expected to remain afloat if it does not sustain serious
damage on landing.
CAPTAIN’S DUTIES DURING DITCHING:
• Ensure EMERGENCY EXIT Lights are ON.
• Remove Life Raft #1 from stowed position. Tie life raft mooring line to
fastened seatbelt at forward exit window, either left or right side.
• Remove forward exit window and deploy Life Raft #1 out window.
• Exit window and follow mooring line to Life Raft #1. Board life raft.
• Direct passengers to follow mooring line to life raft. Assist passengers into
life raft.
FIRST OFFICER’S DUTIES DURING DITCHING:
• Ensure EMERGENCY EXIT Lights are ON.
• Ensure ELT is ON.
• Remove Life Raft #2 from stowed position. Tie life raft mooring line to
fastened seatbelt at aft exit window, same side as Life Raft #1.
• Remove aft exit window and deploy Life Raft #2 out window.
• Exit window and follow mooring line to Life Raft #2. Board life raft.
• Direct passengers to follow mooring line to life raft. Assist passengers into
life raft.
CABIN CREWMEMBER’S DUTIES DURING DITCHING (IF ABOARD):
• Assist Captain and First Officer in obtaining Life Rafts #1 and #2 from
stowed position.
• Assist Captain and First Officer with securing life rafts by tying life raft
mooring line to fastened seatbelt at exit windows.
• Direct Captain and First Officer to open exit windows and deploy life rafts.
For passenger accountability, life rafts go out same side of airplane.
• Have Captain and First Officer follow mooring life raft lines to rafts and
board.
• Continue to direct evacuation from inside airplane. Assist passengers.
• If time permits, gather first aid kit blankets, food, garbage bags, etc., to take
to life rafts.
• Depart via exit window and board life raft.

05-20-40: Emergency Escape Routes
In the event of an emergency, passengers and flight crew may exit through four inwardlyremovable
overwing escape windows. These are the fifth and sixth (farthest aft) windows
on each side of the cabin. Each overwing escape window is provided with a lock release
handle above the window and each is placarded with release and removal instructions.
