to listen, to grab a bite to
eat from the lunch counter,
a drink from the bar, and
perhaps join in a square set
or two as the music plays its
way through the afternoon
and into the early evening.
On Sunday past, it was
Ian MacDougall’s fi ddle that
fi lled the fl oor, accompanied
by Mac Morin on piano and
Pius MacIsaac’s guitar.
While Ian MacDougall
provided the mid-January
fi x for fi ddle fans, there is
a line-up arranged to take
the music all the way across
January and February.
In fact, the January 20th
(next Sunday) offering at the
interpretive centre promises
to be an exceptional
showcase of 10 wonderful
Inverness County musicians.
The ceilidh will feature the
St. FX Celtic Society, and
lest you are tempted to think
of it as a university class of
genealogists and historians,
rest assured it isn’t. The
Celtic Society is comprised
of Whycocomagh fi ddler
Stephanie MacDonald,
Dunvegan fi ddler Katie
MacLeod, Glencoe fi ddler
Kolton MacDonnell, Mabou
piper Rankin MacInnis,
Foot Cape fi ddlers/pipers/
guitarists/bohdran players
Kyle and Keith MacDonald,
Chimney Corner singersongwriter
Mattew
MacLennan, and a couple
of other popular Foot Cape
brothers, fi ddler Robbie
Fraser and pianist Isaac
Fraser. This is certain to be a
memorable music offering.
As for the lineup through
the rest of the winter
months, January 27th will
feature Andrea Beaton;
February 3rd the stage will
be turned over to Glenn
Graham; Shelly Campbell
will entertain on February
17th; and Colin Grant will be
there on February 24th. Each
of those headliners will have
guests with them, promising
Inverness County that music
will not falter and fail as the
winter snow and heating
bills pile up.
Mac Morin, Ian MacDougall and Pius MacIsaac perform Sunday at the Celtic Music
Interpretive Centre in Judique. There was a large turnout for the ceilidh.

3:10 to Yuma: The 1957 version of
this movie has always been one of
my favourite westerns. Van Heflin
and Glenn Ford were wonderful in
this dark, intelligent duster written by
the then unknown Elmore Leonard.
Today, the black and white version is
a little hookie in parts, and the song by Frankie Lane,
a staple at the time, is terrible. So when I heard they
were remaking it with Christian Bale and Russell
Crowe I was pumped. I took my old 3:10 to Yuma
video down from the shelf and watched it again. The
new version is a more realistic yet bloodier version,
but the acting is first-rate, and it follows the 1957
version pretty well. I was impressed until the last 15
minutes when the movie went over the top. There is
no subtlety in this version, and the ending keeps it
from being a truly great western. I don’t want to hear
it compared to Unforgiven again, alright?
