KISS
Kangerlussuaq International Science Support
Scientists and students doing research in Greenland have access to the facilities located centrally in
Kangerlussuaq in the KISS building. Users are offered an array of facilities and possibilities to rent additional
equipment and goods for use in the field or in the labs in KISS. However, only very basic lab equipment
is available and projects that will need equipment should plan to bring their own along or have it
shipped up on beforehand. KISS is owned by Greenland s Home Rule Government and operated by
Mittarfeqarfiit (Civil Aviation Department).
Lake ice
The lakes around Kangerlussuaq are highly diverse in physical and chemical aspects and these differences
result in various freezing and thawing patterns during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Generally speaking,
lakes in the region will be ice-covered from late September until some time in June, with significant
temporal variance; salt lakes and lakes with a large water volume being the slowest to freeze.
Here are some guidelines for determining the safety of lake ice. The following table of safe loads is valid
ONLY for ice that is clear and sound, with no flowing water underneath. It is not reliable for stationary loads.
When in doubt, stay off the ice!
Required minimum ice thickness in cm Description of safe moving load
10 One person on foot, skates or skies
15 One snowmobile
25 A single car

Library
Kangerlussuaq hosts a public library with non-scientific literature in Danish and Greenlandic. The library is
located next to the school and you may read Danish and Greenlandic newspapers and check out books for
up to one month. The library service is free of charge. Opening hours are Monday 16-18, Wednesday
13.30-15.30 and Thursday 15-18. The librarian may be reached within the above hours at phone 84 14 01.
In the KISS building a modest library is found in the lounge at the top floor. Selected periodicals and books
as well as reprints and reports on research themes pertinent to the Kangerlussuaq region are being made
available for in-house use only. Contact the KISS manager if you have any questions or comments relating
to the KISS library.
Please note, that it is recommended that any researcher visiting KISS donate literature to the KISS library.
Donations must be registered and stamped in the manager's office (room 101) before entering the shelves
of the library. Reports and reprints that are otherwise difficult to obtain and that are dealing with subjects
pertinent to the region will be especially appreciated.
Maps
Only a few topographic maps are for sale in the general store and in the tourist shops. In order to be sure to
have the maps you need before you start your activities in and around Kangerlussuaq you are
recommended to obtain your maps prior to going to Greenland.
All ice-free areas of Greenland are covered by topographic maps in scale 1:250 000 and they can be
ordered from 'The National Survey and Cadastre' (Rentemestervej 8, DK-2400 Copenhagen NV, Denmark;
phone: +45 3587 5050, fax: +45 3587 5051). The Kangerlussuaq inland area is represented on two
separate sheets in this scale, i.e. 66V2 and 67V2.
