important events in the
history of Canada and the
United States leave no
doubt as to her sense of
design and her mastery of
the craft. This fine artist
was awarded an honorary
doctorate by Université
de Moncton in 1975 and
was made a member in the
Order of Canada in 1987.
Although Elizabeth passed
away in October, 2005, her
masterpieces live on, forever
to be admired by more and
more visitors.
Marguerite Gallant
(1890-1983) was a native of
Chéticamp with a profound
love of collecting. She
worked in Pennsylvania for
many years as a maid for
the Edward Cahill family. It
is said that she learned the
value of collecting from Mr.
Cahill who was an ardent
collector. When she returned
to Chéticamp in 1938,
Marguerite moved into a
tiny house on Chéticamp
Island which she filled with
objects of all kinds. As
Marguerite’s reputation for
collecting spread through the
community, people brought
objects to her rather than let
them be thrown away. After
her death, La Société Saint-
Pierre became custodians
of the collection and moved
it to Les Trois Pignons.
Thanks to this incurable
collector, many valuable
artifacts from Chéticamp
have been preserved.
Although Father
Anselme Chiasson (1911-
2004) was dedicated to his
ministry as a priest, he never
missed the opportunity
to return for a visit to
Chéticamp, his native
village that he held so close
to his heart. It is with such
love and compassion for
our people and our Acadian
heritage that he launched
into a special mission of the
preservation of our stories,
songs and more. He soon
realized as well that he
had the gift of writing and
published his first book in
1961 – Chéticamp: histoire
et traditions acadiennes,
a book which more or less
put Chéticamp on the map.
An immeasurable passion
for our Acadian folklore
inspired Father Anselme, in
collaboration with his cousin,
Father Daniel Boudreau, to
research, collect and publish
hundreds of old Acadian
traditional songs from here
and other areas of the world.
Many, so many of these
songs would have been lost
and never shared from coast
to coast as they are today!
La Société Saint-Pierre and
our community have truly
been blessed to have such
documentation published –
data that will live on forever
– bringing Acadians from
all over the globe, closer
together as we share such
a bond with our cousins,
sharing a unique history,
