Electricity
Kangerlussuaq has 208 Volt AC, 50Hz as well as 110 Volt AC, 60 Hz current. Therefore, you will encounter
two different outlet types: the continental European outlet as well as the U.S outlet. Please plan your adaptor
needs accordingly, - and bring your own adaptor(s).
Please confer this web page to see the plug adapters recommended for Greenland:

E-mailing
Kangerlussuaq has no Internet Café or similar publicly accessible facility. However, at the airport hotel in
front of the reception an Internet hotspot is available for everyone with their own laptop computer.
Internet access must be gained through the use of private lines or at KISS. The latter has a PC and mail
set-up in room 102 opposite the manager s office at the west end of the ground floor. This mail node is reserved
for KISS users. Ask the KISS manager for details and per-minute charge.
Do not expect high transmission rates. Because all Internet users in Kangerlussuaq share the same limited
Sat-link, an individual line with a nominal transmission rate of 2 Mbits will probably perform as a 56 Kbits
modem line during peak use hours.
Emergencies
When a distress or emergency call from a field party anywhere in Greenland is received by the SAR
(Search And Rescue) authority in Nuuk (i.e. Chief Constable for Greenland) a coordinated SAR or
evacuation operation will be implemented by the SAR authority, involving fixed-wing aircrafts, helicopters,
vessels and rescue crews.
See more in section Radios .
In case of a local emergency involving personal injury or acute illness, please call phone number +299 84
12 11 and report location and situation.
Firearms
In and around Kangerlussuaq there is no reason to carry firearms for personal protection against adverse
actions by the local wildlife. See also the section Muskoxen .
If you leave Kangerlussuaq to do fieldwork in areas where polar bears may be encountered you may
choose to bring along firearms.
If so, you will need to have a valid firearm permit for each of your firearms. Permits can be obtained from
the Chief Constable of Greenland, P.O. Box 1006, DK-3900 Nuuk, Greenland. Telephone: +299 32 1448,
fax: +299 32 4194.
The firearm(s) and the licence must be shown on request to any appropriate authority.
Please confer the Act on control and registration of firearms in Greenland

Fishing
As a guest in Greenland you are required to buy a sport fishing licence if you want to do any fishing. The
only fish species available in this region for sport fishing is Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). The licence is for
sale at the police office as well as at the Kangerlussuaq Tourism shop in the airport building. You can
choose between a sport fishing licence valid for one month (DKK 200) or a licence valid for three months
(DKK 500).
Fjord ice
The surface water in Kangerlussuaq fjord is frozen between October-November and June. However, the ice
is thick and safe enough for general traffic by sleds and vehicles ONLY in January March. Even in that
period, caution should be taken when crossing the tidal zone with cracked ice, sometimes hidden in snow.
Tidal cracks occur in fast ice when the tidal action moves the sea ice above and below the level at which it
is shorebound.
Remember: Hazardous conditions may exist on the sea ice at any time of the season !!
Please ask at the police station or seek local advice and opinions before you venture out onto the fjord ice !!
If you do go
don t go alone !!
Flight line
Kangerlussuaq is dissected by the flight line, i.e. a 2815 m runway, the adjacent taxiways, and the aprons.
All this space is reserved for aircraft and the services directly associated with aircraft. All paved areas
