Strait Area Chamber to host Showcase 2008
The Strait Area
Chamber of Commerce is
once again showcasing the
growth and expansion of
its membership and other
Strait-based companies.
Upwards of 100
businesses are expected to
be at the Port Hawkesbury
Civic Centre the weekend of
May 9th to 11th. The Business
& Consumer Showcase
2008 in conjunction with the
Rotary Wine Fair, a career
fair and the Chamber’s
annual general meeting
will take place during the
2nd weekend in May.
“These events will
provide a platform for
local businesses to thank
customers, celebrate
successes, network, share
ideas and move forward as
a community. The public
will be treated to
three days of exhibits, retail
booths, career assistance
and demonstrations by
established and new
businesses,” said Bob
MacEachern, president of
the Strait Area Chamber of
Commerce. “There
will also be a nice social
aspect to the weekend with
the Chamber’s AGM and
dinner on Friday
night and the Rotary Wine
Fair on Saturday night,”
added MacEachern.
The event will kick
off on Friday afternoon
with the career fair and the
opening of the Business
& Consumer Showcase.
Friday evening’s lineup
includes the president’s
reception followed by
the Chamber’s AGM and
dinner. The annual Rotary
Wine Fair, a community
favourite, is partnering with
the Strait Area Chamber of
Commerce for a second
time; a similar partnership
took place in 2006, and
was very successful. The
wine fair will be held on
Saturday evening, with
the showcase wrapping up
Sunday afternoon.
All local businesses and
organizations in the Strait
Area are able to participate,
however space is limited,
so make your reservations
early. This weekend
extravaganza expects to
draw
approximately 2,500 to
3,000 participants over the
course of three days and
promises to be a first-class
event not to be missed.

In an era of time
when the communities of
Chéticamp, Saint-Josephdu-
Moine and Margaree,
were still experiencing the
ripple effects of the war,
our people were faced with
the many challenges of
surviving and re-gaining
their status in the area. The
Cooperative Movement had
been established and was
well on its way, consisting
of a group of local fishermen
and other members of the
community who founded
the first Fishermen’s Co-op,
the Co-op, the Credit Union
and the local rug hooking
network, etc. This took care
of most of the economic
interests of our Acadians,
but what about the other
needs? Would our Acadians
be able to continue speaking
their native tongue?
Celebrate their traditions
and practice their religion?
It became apparent that any
dealings with the law and
government officials were
done solely in English, and
our Acadians would just
have to adapt. One fine
example of this was the
exploitation of our people in
the Cap Rouge area to make
way for a national park.
Although we live in one of
the most beautiful places in
the world, our people faced
the struggles of living in an
isolated region, remote from
many of the services readily
available to other parts
of our province. It would
seem, and still feels this
way at times, that we are
sometimes forgotten in the
big scheme of things. There
was also much concern
revolving around the subject
of our young students and
opportunities for them to
obtain an education. It was
the combination of these
issues and much pride that
inspired a group of devoted
people from this area to
organize and implement
the founding of La Société
Saint-Pierre. This would
be a society whose main
