– During the past 10 years,
the society has welcomed
over 150,000 visitors of
which approximately 70,000
were paying customers.
– In the past three decades,
the society has created over
350 jobs.
– The society works closely
with Le Conseil des Arts de
Chéticamp in ensuring that
activities such as Le Festival
de l’Escaouette continue to
grow each year, that our
traditional song and dance
be developed and taught
to our youth, that this part
of our culture continues to
thrive in our community and
that visitors get a taste of our
culture through theatre and
special productions such
as Le Grand Cercle – our
world renowned musical
production.
– La Société Saint-Pierre is
also active in the community
as members of the Le
Conseil Communautaire de
Chéticamp in implementing
the global community plan.
This year marks the 60th
Anniversary of La Société
Saint-Pierre. Members of
the Society, friends and
media personnel gathered
at Les Trois Pignons to
celebrate this special event.
There was a sense of pride
and joy among the visitors
as they participated in the
following:
– warm welcome from the
president of the society,
Napoléon Chiasson;
– Power Point presentation
looking back at 60 years of
history;
– presentation of a historical
view of the society by former
employee and present board
member Daniel Aucoin;
– presentation of the Special
Edition of a Historical and
Genealogical/Bulletin by
local historian Charles D.
Roach. In memory of the 60th
anniversary of La Société
Saint-Pierre, this Special
Edition has been published
and will be available to all
members for the low price
of $5;
– presentation of a special
hooked rug that was
originally made by Gerard
and Annie Rose Deveau
and several women of this
area. This rug had been the
property of the Fédération
acadienne de la NouvelleÉcosse
and has been returned
to the society – presented
by executive director of
Les Trois Pignons, Lisette
Bourgeois;
– presentation of a special
plaque of behalf of LeMoine
Development Association by
President Léandre LeBlanc;
– certificate from the
Municipality of County of
Inverness by MLA Daniel
Boudreau;
– presentation of numerous
letters of congratulations
and best wishes including
certificates from Premier
Rodney MacDonald as well
as Rodger Cuzner, M.P.
Following the
formalities, people gathered
in the foyer for refreshments
while reminiscing and
sharing special moments of
the society’s achievement
over the years. There was
a special comment made
about the founding members
and how wonderful it would
be to have them here among
us to share this special day.
Many of us believe that if
at all possible, they were
present throughout the entire
journey of La Sociéte Saint-
Pierre!
La Sociéte Saint-Pierre
has become the backbone
or the key that holds the
community together so to
speak and stands as the
protector of our history
and our ancestry. As the
official liaison representing
the Acadian population of
Chéticamp, Saint-Josephdu-
Moine and Margaree,
“la grande région de
Chéticamp” is now on
the map, a destination for
many visitors who come
to experience a taste of
our culture and visit our
beautiful, picturesque
Acadian village. If we could
turn back the pages of time
to the 17th century, you
would see a time of “grande
misère,” war and suffering
for the Acadians of our
province. Today, through
hardships, determination
and struggles, thanks to
associations such as La
Société Saint-Pierre, our
Acadian heritage is still rich
and thriving. We are now
proud to share our heritage
with the rest of the world!
