been awarded for long-term
care beds. More beds will
be announced in the coming
weeks. We are working
towards shorter wait times.
– And, we’ve introduced
the Nova Scotia Family
Pharmacare Program – part
of our commitment to safer,
healthy communities.
Beginning March
fi rst, this program will be
available to every person in
the province. The time to
enroll is now.
All you need is a valid
Nova Scotia health card.
Being part of our pharmacare
program will give you the
peace of mind in case your
medical needs change and
you require prescription
drugs that in some cases can
cost thousands of dollars.
Right now in Nova Scotia,
there are approximately one
hundred and eighty thousand
people who don’t have any
drug coverage. This plan
will ensure they get the
coverage when they need it.
Even if you have a
private plan, you should still
sign up.
While your private
insurer would be the fi rst
to pay a claim, any portion
unpaid by the private plan
would be sent to family
pharmacare for coverage.
Let your pharmacy know you
have both private insurance
and family pharmacare.
They can coordinate benefi ts
between the two insurances.
There is no fee to sign
up. And if you don’t use the
program, it won’t cost you
anything. If you do need
medication, your out-ofpocket
costs will be capped
at a percentage of your
family income.
All the details on
the family pharmacare
program can be found on
the internet. Simply go to
www.nspharmacare.ca and
click on family pharmacare
program. You will fi nd a
program booklet, answers to
frequently asked questions,
and the registration form.
There is even a calculator
to help you estimate your
deductible. You can also call
this toll-free number: 1-877-
330-0323.
I pledged to create this
program in the last election
campaign. We have kept
our promise. It’s a good
program, and it can help
tens of thousands of people.
I sincerely hope you don’t
need to use it, but sign up
just in case.
Thank you.

In Inverness County people go the extra mile to help out
Dear editor,
On December 29th, 2007
my wife and I were involved
in a car accident coming into
Inverness from Mabou. The
other car was driven by a
woman and her two children
coming out of Inverness. The
road was full of slush and
very slippery. My car slipped
off the pavement onto the
shoulder of the road. I guess
I over-corrected to get back
on the pavement, and my car
started to slip sideways, and
I had no way of stopping the
sideway movement. I told
my wife, “Oh oh, I hope
that car on top of the hill
stops, as I have no control.”
However, I realized that the
other car could not put on
their brakes or they would
lose control. My car was
now over the centre line and
slowly heading for a fronton
collision. Finally my car
started slowly to move to the
right, but time was not there
for me. My car and the other
car hit, both on the headlight
side of the driver’s side of
each car. It was a lady who
was driving the other car; I
don’t know her name. She
was very calm, concerned
for her children; she was
very lady-like. I thought she
may scream at me. She was
a lady and apparently a very
good driver; otherwise it
could have been a lot worse.
I called the hospital to get
her name. They would not
release her name to me.
The hospital emergency
department treated us like
kin. They examined us,
took x-rays, etc. It appears
my wife was hurt the most.
She had a crack in her chest
bone and swollen nose and
sore ribs. My wife and I had
our seatbelts on, however
they did not restrain us. I
hit the steering wheel; she
had a longer space to the
dash where she suffered a
cracked bone in her chest.
The air bags popped out, but
not enough air to cushion
the blow from the impact
of the two cars hitting. I
complained to someone, a
fi remen or by-stander, and
he said that when the airbags
fi rst came out, they had too
much air and hurt people.
Apparently, they reduced the
amount of air at the expense
of the people who travel in
cars.
