the experienced Gillies
came to the fore, earning the
tournament’s most valuable
player award.
“Chad really stayed
focused while Brad sat out
on three fouls. He really
picked his pace up this year,
taking it to the net, and when
he’s hot on the inside and
hot from outside, he’s really
hard to stop.”
Gillies also fi nished
the game with 24 points,
including six three-pointers.
Beaton also noted the
play of Ryan Moore and
James Gillis, who made
some big plays at key points
of the game; and Lohen
Campbell, who wouldn’t
take himself out of the game
in the dying minutes after
re-injuring a sore knee.
Moore, Gillis and
Campbell rounded out the
scoring with 10, 8 and 2
points respectively.
Gillis was named player

Provincial conflict forces rural hockey players out of game
-by Bill Dunphy
The decision to hold both high
school hockey and minor hockey
provincials on the same weekend
in March could force rural Nova
Scotia children to quit one team
for the other.
The Nova Scotia School
Athletic Federation (NSSAF) and
Hockey Nova Scotia (HNS) have
scheduled the majority of their
respective provincial tournaments
on the weekend of March 28th-
30th.
This means Midget-aged
players outside of Metro Halifax
and Sydney, who regularly play
both levels of hockey, will have to
choose which team they will play
for if both qualify for provincials.
“If they don’t change it, there’s
not a doubt in my mind we won’t
be able to go,” said Brian Hinkley,
coach of the Inverness Midget A
Ravens.
Of the 17 players on Hinkley’s
roster, 15 also play high school
hockey at either Inverness
Academy or Cape Breton
Highlands Academy in Terre
Noire.
“We have a good shot at
provincial championship this year,
and the guys have been working
hard towards this goal. But they
are also committed to their high
school teams, and I can understand
them wanting to play in those
provincials if they qualify.
`Minor hockey is supposed to
be about the kids, but the way this
is set up, nobody’s thinking about
the kids,” Hinkley said.
The problem doesn’t exist
in the larger centres, where
high school hockey leagues are
comparable in skill to Major
Midget AAA. As such, Division
1 high school players are not
allowed to play minor hockey, just
as Major Midget players cannot
play high school.
And because of the larger
population, minor hockey
associations (MHAs) in these
larger centres still have enough
kids to fi ll Minor Midget, Midget
A & B teams.
But in rural areas, students
who play high school hockey
during the week are the same
kids who play for their MHA on
the weekend. They’re also the
same kids who play basketball,
volleyball, soccer and whatever
else their school offers in extracurricular
activities.
Ron O’Flaherty, acting
executive director of the NSSAF,
said a situation such as this arises
every four years or so and is not the
result of a lack of communication
between the two sports’ governing
bodies.
“What you have to recognize
are things coming into play that
make it almost a ‘perfect storm,’”
O’Flaherty said.
“You have March break, Easter
weekend, and the end of ice-time
at most arenas; and there’s no way
we can play over Easter.”
O’Flaherty said the situation
has been discussed at length
with his HNS counterpart Darren
Cossar, but without a solution.
“We try very hard not put
people into a situation where they
