The routing of the gravel road
between the airport and Point
660 via Sandflugtsdalen.
Kangerlussuaq airport is only
20 km away from the Ice
Sheet. Heading east from the
mountain 'Keglen' (aka 'Sugar
Loaf') a good quality gravel
road run all the way through
the valley "Sandflugtsdalen" to
the very edge of the ice sheet
at the locality known as Russel
Glacier.
About 3 km west of the glacier front the gravel road divides into two. The one leading north towards the
ridge continues through rolling hils and all the way through Israndsdalen close to and parallel with the ice
edge until Point 660 where the roads stops in the moraine hills adjacent to the Ice Sheet proper.
PLEASE NOTE, that the road to Point 660 has limited access and is primarily open only to researchers and
tourist transporting vehicles. Ask the municipal office (blue building across the street from KISS) or your
logistics operator for a key to the gate.

Sports
The gym center is located down the road from KISS. In this huge building an array of facilities are at your
disposal if you want to do work-out and body building or perhaps play badminton, volley or basket ball,
indoor socker, or racquet ball. You will also find an indoor swimming pool, a hot spa pool, and saunas.
Swim suits or trunks can be rented in the center.
There is an admission fee of DKK 15 to the indoor facilities. The opening hours are: Monday - Friday 14.00-
22.00, Saturday - Sunday 12.00 - 18.00. Adjacent to the center are an outdoor tennis court and a softball
field. If you join the sports club KALIF as a member the gym center is open to you also in the evenings until
22.00 (all week).
Sondrestrom Research Facility / SRF
Located about 2 km north of Kangerlussuaq harbour, this facility is dedicated to studying the polar upper
atmosphere. For historical reasons, this research station is known around the world as the Sondrestrom
Upper Atmospheric Research Facility in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. Locally, the facility is known as
Kelleyville after the last name of the first P.I., John Kelley. The facility is operated by SRI International in
Menlo Park, California, under the auspices of the U.S. National Science Foundation and in joint cooperation
with Denmark's Meteorological Institute. SRF has been operating in Greenland since 1983 and continues to
be in high demand by the scientific communities.
SRF is host to more than 20 instruments, the majority of which provide unique and complementary
information about the arctic upper atmosphere. Together these instruments advance our knowledge of
upper atmospheric physics and determine how the tenuous neutral gas interacts with the charged space
plasma environment. The suite of instrumentation supports many disciplines of research; from plate
tectonics to auroral physics and space weather. The facility instrumentation covers the electromagnetic
spectrum while the data results span the spectrum of polar research.
The centerpiece instrument of the facility is an L-band incoherent scatter (IS) radar with a 32 m fully
steerable antenna. The IS radar technique is a powerful tool capable of measuring range-resolved
ionospheric and atmospheric parameters simultaneously from the ground to the outer reaches of our
atmosphere. Use of a steerable antenna allows spatial coverage in both latitude and longitude.
