The new-and-improved
Strait Junior B Pirates are
about to have their legitimacy
to a claim on a 12-game
winning streak tested by two
Nova Scotia Junior League
opponents they haven’t seen
in a while.
The Pirates are coming
off a three-game weekend in
which they won all three to
extend a marked turnaround
in their season.
“We’re doing the little
things right; and building on
the things we’re doing well,
especially our defensive
zone coverage and making
that first good pass,” said
Pirates coach Raymond
Snook.
With a 4-3 win over
Pictou County at home on
Thursday, followed by a 13-
2 rout of the Cape Breton
Canadians on Friday at the
Port Hawkesbury Civic
Centre, the Pirates struggled
early in St. Margaret’s Bay
for Saturday’s game against
the Ducks.
“We got away from
it, the back-checking and
keeping a man high, and
paid for it on turnovers,”
said Snook. “Defence
will always be a work on
progress, but there’s lots of
other areas to improve on.”
In St. Margaret’s, the
physical Ducks led 4-3
early in the third before the
Pirates pulled it together for
a 6-4 win.
Lance Gillies scored
twice, with singles from
Graham DeCoste, Eric
MacQuarrie, Josh Wood and
Dan Hickey.
On Thursday in Port
Hawkesbury, the Pirates led
the Pictou County Scotians
2-1 and 3-1 by periods on
the way to a 4-3 win.
A powerplay goal by
Travis King in the third
proved to be the winner.
Also scoring were Marc
Levangie, Brad MacLean
and Luke MacDonald.
Jon MacDonald made
26 saves for the win.
The Pirates scored well
and often on Friday night
for a rare blowout, handing
the Cape Breton Canadians
a 13-2 loss.
John Jardine led the
onslaught with four goals.
Marc Levangie settled for
a hat trick, with singles
from Shawn MacManaman,
Brandon MacIsaac, Jeff
Pierce, Travis King,
Josh Wood and Dave
MacGregor.
This Friday the
Antigonish Bulldogs are at
the civic centre for a 7:30
p.m. match. The Pirates
travel to Sackville on
Monday.
“There’s so much more
hockey left to play,” said
Snook. “We’re one point
behind Antigonish. Our
goals this weekend are to
win the games we can, keep
our goals-against down, and
work on our powerplay.”
Courtney MacKinnon, of the Inverness Rebels, and
Meagan Campbell, of the Dalbrae Dragons, battle
for a rebound during Wednesday’s league semifinal
match at Inverness.
earlier in the week, but
Inverness coach Jamie
White felt it was more of
the Rebels’ good play than
Dalbrae playing poorly with
a lead.
“I’m going to give
ourselves the credit there,”
he said. “We were missing
an awful pile of shots early
on, but that turned itself
around in the second half,”
said White.
He also noted that the
half-court trap the Rebels
started helped force some
turnovers which the girls
turned into points. “We kept
them from scoring and got
some points ourselves.”
MacDonnell led the
Rebels with 13 points, with
Cora Campbell adding 11.
Also scoring: MacDougall,
9; Onna White, 8; Melanie
Poirier, 3; Laura MacArthur,
1.
Meagan Campbell
was the top shooter for
Dalbrae, scoring 14 points.
Also scoring: Nicole Van
Zutphen, 7; Bridget Wilson,
Laura Rankin and Theresa
Rankin, 6 each; Marissa
MacNeil and Sarah Rankin,
2 each.
The Rebels will meet
the Baddeck Broncos in the
league final, to be played at
a later date.
Inverness also hosted and
won a four-team tournament
on the weekend, beating the
Richmond Hurricane 57-26
in the final.
Cora Campbell had
a monster game with 23
points. Also scoring: Leah
MacDonnell and Melanie
Poirier, 9 each; Hayley
MacDonnell, 8; Amber
MacDougall, 7; Onna White,
3; Brittany MacKinnon and
Michelle Fraser, 2 each.
On Friday, Inverness
defeated Colchester
Christian Academy 46-37.
MacDougall and
Campbell had 15 and 10
points respectively for
the Rebels. Also scoring:
MacDonnell, 8; White, 5;
Poirier, 4; Kelsey, 2.
In the other round-robin
game, Inverness defeated
Holy Angels 44-34.
Evan Gillis, of the Inverness Ravens, winds up for a
