She said the plane was
shaking, debris was fl ying
all over, but fortunately
there was nothing too big.
“An Ipod hit me,” she
said. “It only lasted about 15
seconds, but it seemed much
longer. None of the baggage
compartments opened, so
that was a blessing. There
were playing cards fl ying all
through the airplane.”
“It was a bumpy ride to
Calgary, and it took a long
while for the pilot to come
on and explain what had
happened,” she added. “He
said they were no longer
fl ying on auto-pilot and
went to manual.”
She said that he had
their lives and his own in his
hands, and she understood
why he didn’t talk to them
right away.
“We were terrifi ed, both
of us,” she said. “When it
happened the second time
we thought we were going
to die. We were over the
mountains at that point.”
They were sitting over
the wing when all this
happened.
“We weren’t hurt at
all,” she said. “I was always
nervous about fl ying, but
we’ve fl own so much that
we became a little more
relaxed.”
They took another plane
from Calgary to Toronto and
then on to Halifax.
“We did it, and we
weren’t too upset,” Martha
said.
She said both of them
were in shock until Sunday,
but began feeling a little
better on Monday.
“It defi nitely wasn’t just
turbulence. We’ve fl own
down south and to Europe
and we know what they
are,” she said. “The plane
shuddered going down.”
Martha said Air
Canada contacted them
and told them they would
keep them updated on the
investigation.
“The crew were very
good and kind,” she said.
“They were excellent. One
of the attendants bumped
her head but continued to
fulfi l her duties. She was
just a young girl and was a
little shook up.”
“It was an awful shock
to the system,” she said.
“My husband doesn’t do
much talking, but he’s done
a lot since the fl ight. I guess
it’s best to talk it out.”

CB municipal leaders worried over future of ECBC
-by John Gillis
Concern over the future
of Enterprise Cape Breton
Corporation is on the minds
of municipal leaders in Cape
Breton, according to Port
Hawkesbury Mayor Billy
Joe MacLean.
At the most recent
meeting of Port Hawkesbury
Town Council, Mayor Billy
Joe MacLean said it has
come to his attention that
the federal government
may be undertaking a
study assessing the value
of ECBC. MacLean said it
would be his intention to put
the topic on the January 14th
agenda for the meeting of
the Strait Area Mayors and
Wardens Committee.
“I have been informed in
the last few weeks that there
may be an announcement
of a consulting study to
do an analysis of the value
of Enterprise Cape Breton
and DEVCO as it relates
to ACOA, to see whether
DEVCO and Enterprise
Cape Breton should be
brought together as one unit
or should they be absorbed
into the main framework
of ACOA. That scares me
that someone in a higher
bureaucratic level would
like to absorb and do away
with Enterprise Cape
Breton,” Mayor MacLean
told reporters after the
regular session of town
council January 8th.
MacLean wants to see
all Cape Breton and area
municipal leaders lobby the
Nova Scotia MP about the
urgency to fi nd a suitable
replacement for Rick
Beaton, the former CEO
of Enterprise Cape Breton
who stepped down from the
post last spring. MacLean
