3. Altimeter
Possible causes Solutions
Altimeter does not read:
-clogged static pressure tube. -check for clogging of static tube, and
-faulty instrument mechanism. clear. -replace the faulty altimeter with a functional one, and monitor the new readings; if still faulty after he test, replace the instrument.
Altimeter reads erroneously: -wrong positioning of the pointing needles, cracked diaphragm of aneroid capsule. -de-calibrated instrument. -rotate the instrument mechanism by means of the gear rack until the needles return to zero (in accordance with the actual conditions on the airfield). -replace the altimeter with a good one and check its reading; if the new instrument proves to be malfunctioning after testing,

Vacillating needles: -oscillations of the static pressure - pressure losses at the air speed indicator or at the vertical speed indicator. replace it -check the pipes and unclog them, if necessary, or reapply the sealing coats. -check the faulty instruments and unclog the faulty pipes if necessary, or reapply the sealing coats.
9.11. Maintenance of instruments not connected to a system
1. Compass adjustment
The compass adjustment is carried out with the airplane in flight configuration, as
near as possible to the time of initiating the flight.
When changing the flight configuration, or when exceeding a storage period of 4
months, resume the adjustment procedure.
A. Preliminary work
1.
First check for any magnetization of the compass fastening screws.
2.
Move the aircraft onto a horizontal platform with distance bearing points, away from any magnetic perturbation source
3.
Activate the electrical circuits of permanent service: engine control, signaling.
B. Adjustment
I. First round
1.
Set the compensators to the null effect position.
2.
Steer the aircraft on the magnetic North (Cm = 0°).
3.
Read and record the instrument error (magnetic deviation Cc).
4.
Repeat the above procedure after steering the aircraft on the magnetic fields Cm of 90°.
5.
After resuming the original position, calculate the arithmetic mean of magnetic deviations and the calculated value of reversed sign
II. Second round
1.
Steer the aircraft on the direction of magnetic North (Cm).
