3. Horizontal and vertical tail unit (fig. 11; 12; 13; 28)
The vertical tail unit consists of a fixed vertical stabilizer and a moving rudder. The vertical stabilizer is installed at an angle of 1.5 ° with reference to the vertical symmetrical plane of the aircraft, so that the aerodynamic effect compensates the rolling moment of the engine. The rudder is fitted with a fixed aerodynamic trim tab made o sheet metal, and adjustable on ground. Vertical stabilizer design: two spars made of dished sheet metal, four ribs, sheet metal skins and a front fitting. Rudder design: a Al tube spar, five ribs, sheet metal skin, upper fairing and actuating fittings located at the bottom of the spar.
The horizontal tail unit consists of a fixed stabilizer, formed of two brackets and two elevator sides. The LH elevator is provided with a cockpit controlled trim tab. The aerodynamic load created by the two stabilizer brackets is taken over and sent to the fuselage structure by means of two struts made of Al tube. Each stabilizer bracket consists of two spars made of dished sheet metal, four ribs,

sheet metal skins, front and rear fittings. The elevator consists of a spar made of Al tube, five ribs, sheet metal skin, an upper fairing and an actuating fitting fastened on the spar. A balancing counterweight is fastened inside the elevator upper fairing.
The aerodynamic profile of the horizontal and vertical tail unit may be considered an optimized flat plate, rounded in the leading edge area and pointed in the trailing edge area.
3.1.2. Maintenance of airframe
3.1.2.1. Outside of airplane
Level of certification needed: Owner
Check the general condition of the skins and joints, to make sure that they do not show any cracks, dents, distortions, damaged paint coat or loosened riveted joints.
Any such non-conformances require a more detailed inspection, followed by an analysis with a view to establish their causes, measures to remove them as necessary.
3.1.2.2 Airframe
Level of certification needed: LSA Repairman - Maintenance
With the wing-to-fuselage, fuselage-to-tail unit fairing and all the access covers opened, inspect all airframe design elements, paying special attention to the joint fittings and mounts for the flight controls. Check the panels, frames, stiffeners, stringers, ribs, spars for dents and loosened fastening; remove any non-conformance.
Remove the dirt and any foreign matters, check again the correct assembly, tightening and secure fastening, check for foreign objects, then close the fairing and the access covers.
3.2. Landing gear
3.2.1. Landing gear description (fig. 8; 10; 15; 16; 19)
Festival R40S is fitted with a non-retractable, tricycle type, provided with a nose wheel. The main gears, of elastic blade type, are made of high-strength aluminum alloy. The nose gear is of welded design, fitted with a rubber shock absorber and movably fastened to the engine mount. Two rigid rods are used to control the nose gear from the rudder pedal. Both the nose gear and the main gear are equipped with tires and air tubes. Optionally, the wheels can be fitted with fenders.
