7.1.1. Description and operation of oil system
FESTIVAL R40S was designed with a closed oil circuit consisting of tank, cooler, and related connecting pipes with the engine. The oil tank is a metallic structure with two rotary vents (inlet and outlet), a cover with level dipstick and a port for the oil system ventilation. This oil tank is mounted on the firewall and attached to the engine mount, on the upper side. The oil cooler is mounted on the lower side of the engine mount and firewall. To increase its efficiency in operation, this oil cooler was provided with two air intake ports: one outside the engine cowling, and the other one inside the cowling. The oil pump sucks in oil from the tank through the oil cooler, and forces it to pass through the oil filter, up to the engine greasing stations. After greasing, the oil collects on the bottom of the crankcase and is forced to flow toward the oil tank by the gases inside. The oil temperature and pressure probes are located on the pump encasing. Temperature and pressure readings are displayed by the instruments on the control panel. Connection is ensured by hoses of

Visually check the oil level on every flight day, by reading it on the tank cover dipstick. Before checking the oil level, turn the propeller by hand several times, so as to transfer all the oil from engine to tank. This process is completed when the oil tank receives only air, which can be checked when the cover is taken off. Replenish if necessary.
Replace the oil only when the engine is hot. First remove the plug from the tank bottom and drain all the oil. Whenever replacing the oil, also replace the oil filter on the engine. Install a new filter (after greasing its gasket with oil), by manually tightening it. After a running test, retighten the filter by hand.
Check the oil pressure and temperature probes every 25, 50 and 100 hours of flight. Check their technical condition and secure mounting.
Check the oil pipes for any damages, leakage, hardening due to heating, porosity, secure fastening. Check the pipe routes for any bent, crooked or obstructed areas, by removing the fire sleeves, and checking especially the pipe areas to be mounted on fittings and under collars.
7.1.3. Repairs to oil system
Level of certification needed: A&P Mechanic
Replace any parts and pipes showing damages, or the ones with invalid lifetime.
