3.4. Engine cowling
3.4.1. Description of engine cowling (see fig. 1) It is made of composites, and it consists of two detachable cowling halves (upper and lower). Screws are used to fasten the cowling halves on the airplane and to each other.
The upper cowling is provided with an inspection door designed for checking the oil level in the engine oiling system. Two other doors on the same upper cowling ensure access to the engine, for regular maintenance tasks; they are attached lengthwise the contour, by means of fast assembly elements (turnstiles), except for the upper side, where hinges are fitted.
Component elements of the cowlings:
-
air intake port, providing the air necessary to cool down the oil radiator;
-
air intake port for engine fuelling;
-
air intake for cooling the radiator in the fluid cooling system;
-
circular dynamic air intake for cooling the engine cylinders;
-
cutouts for the nose gear, exit of the engine exhaust system pipe;
-adjustable throttle for modifying the air supply inside the engine bay.
3.4.2. Maintenance of engine cowling
Level of certification needed: Owner
Check the air intake ports for clogging or dirt traces, and, if any, remove them.
Remove the dirt (oil, dust etc.) from the cowling.
Check the technical condition, so as to identify any damages
3.4.3. Repairing of engine cowling
To repair any mechanical damages of the engine cowling (such as cracks or breaks), contact the manufacturer (S.C. Aerostar S.A.), or a shop specialized in production of composite items.
3.5. Engine fastening (see picture 9)
3.5.1. Description of engine fastening
Two distinct assemblies are provided for fastening the engine on the airframe:
a) Engine mount, an assembly of welded tubes made of 4130 steel; at the rear side, this mount is fitted with 4 (four) bushings, representing the attachment points to the firewall fittings, and at the front side, with four bushings for attaching the engine ring.
b) Engine ring, consisting in a closed frame made of bent welded tubes made of 4130 steel, on which are fastened the bushings for engine-mount attachment and the bushings that sustain the shock-absorbers and the engine fasteners.
3.5.2. Maintenance of engine mount
Level of certification needed: A&P Mechanic
1. Check the general condition of the engine mount, especially in the weld areas, so as to identify any buckling/distortions, cracks and corrosion; if the visual inspection results are not conclusive, use a magnifying glass or pentrant inspection.
