Every two years replace the coolant fluid, as follows: open the expansion tank cover, remove the fastening screw (with sealing ring) located at the lower side of the pump and drain the fluid. Replace the pump screw gasket and install the screw. Fill the expansion tank with fresh coolant fluid and mount the cover.
NOTE: Allow the engine to run until it reaches the operation temperature, then let it cool down before checking the coolant fluid level. If necessary, refill.
Wash the coolant system after every 200 hours of operation, with water at a pressure of maximum 2 bar (29 psi), connecting a water hose to one of the lowest system outlets.
Replace the coolant system rubber sleeves every 5 years.
NOTE: Replace any damaged or expired cooling system components.
7.3. Brake system
7.3.1. Description and operation of brake system
Main components of brake system:
-brake cylinders;
-parking valve;
-brake linings;
-brake fluid tank;
-control devices;
-connecting pipes.
FESTIVAL R40S is provided with a hydraulic brake system, with single operation, for pilot only, by means of the rudder pedals, with a separate circuit for each landing gar wheel. As an option,

the airplane can be fitted with double brake system, for pilot and copilot. During parking, the airplane may be immobilized by using the parking brake. During takeoff/landing running, the airplane direction can also be controlled by means of wheel braking, through successive actuation of the LH and RH wheel brake, by pressing the brake pedal on the corresponding rudder bar (LH or RH). The brake fluid tank is located on the font side of the firewall, easily accessible for inspection and fluid refills. During parking the braking is ensured by a parking valve, controlled by a lever located under the control panel, in central RH position. To actuate the parking brake, lock the two wheels of the landing gear in position by pressing the rudder bar brake pedals to maximum, then by pulling the parking valve control lever and rotating it 90° to the right. The connection between the brake system elements is ensured by rigid and flexible pipes, fittings, and collars.
7.3.2. Maintenance of brake system
Level of certification needed: A&P Mechanic
The brake fluid tank is inspected daily, to check the fluid level, which should range between the “Minimum” and “Maximum” marks. If necessary, replenish with fluid of the same type.
The condition and secure fastening of the brake system plastic hoses are inspected after 100 hours of flight.
The whole brake system is checked for any leakage of fluid, replenishing and ventilation, or loosening of rudder pedals after 25, 50 and 100 hours of flight. System ventilation is done separately on each circuit (LH - RH), by draining fluid from each brake ban, until the flow is continuous. Do not reuse the drained fluid. Fill the fluid tank up to “Maximum”.
