 POTABLE WATER SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  The potable water system consists of water storage tanks, distribution and drainage tubing, and a pressurization system to move the water to the points of use. Water quantity is monitored by a transmitter and indicator.
 B.  The water storage tanks are filled from the water service panel. From the storage tanks, the potable water is distributed to the lavatory washbasin and the galley.
 C.  The water system gets pressurized air from pneumatic manifold or the water system compressor. When the air pressure from the pneumatic manifold is low, the water system compressor gives the air pressure that is necessary to operate the water system.
 D.  The potable water system is monitored by an electrical transmitter that detects the storage tank water level and transmits by electrical signals the water quantity to the water quantity indicators.

 POTABLE WATER SYSTEM - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure gives the instructions for two tasks. The first task is to clean the potable water system with a disinfectant solution.
 B.  Clean the potable water system with the disinfectant solution when these conditions occur:
 (1)  
There are signs of contamination in the system.

 (2)  
You made a repair to the system.

 C.  The potable water tanks are in the forward cargo compartment and each tank has a capacity of 10 gallons.

 2.  Potable Water System Cleaning (with Disinfectant)_____________________________
 A.  Standard Tools and Equipment
 (1)  
Container - Plastic (with a capacity of 2 or 3 gallons)

 (2)  
Instrument - Stirring (to mix the solution in the 2 or 3 gallon container)

 B.  Consumable Materials
 (1)  
G00022 - Chemical - Water Purifying Chlorine Dioxide (Stabilized 2% Solution)

 (2)  
B00637 Acid - Citric (crystals or powder),Commercially available

 E.  Prepare to Disinfect the Potable Water System.

Drain the tanks (Ref 12-14-61/301).

If installed, remove the water filter cartridge from the water filters in the lavatory and galley.

If applicable, install the water filter covers into their position.

Disconnect the coffeemaker if it is applicable.

 F.  Disinfect the Potable Water System

Fill the tanks with potable water until they are half full (AMM 12-14-61/301).

Make the disinfectant that follows:

 NOTE: The disinfectant mixtures will provide the full system with
____ a solution of chlorine at 100 parts per million.
 (a)  Recommended disinfectant:
 1)  Chlorine dioxide (stabilized 2%) and citric acid (crystals or powder)
 WARNING:_______DO NOT BREATHE THE CHLORINE DIOXIDE GAS. WHEN THE TWO CHEMICALS ARE MIXED, CHLORINE DIOXIDE GAS IS PRODUCED WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS IF THEY BREATHE THE GAS.
 a)  AIRPLANES WITH TWO TANKS (20 GAL CAPACITY); Mix the following amounts of chlorine dioxide with citric acid in a clean plastic container:
