RIBBON HEATER - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. General_______
A. This procedure has two tasks, one for the removal and one for the installation of the water line and waste drain ribbon heaters.
B. The procedure is the same for all ribbon heaters.

2. Ribbon Heater Removal_____________________
A. Procedure

Open the circuit breakers for the heaters.

Get access to the heater.

Cut the ribbon heater electrical leads.
NOTE:____Let the cut electrical leads stay where they are. This will help you to find the splice. Remove them when you make a splice with the new leads.

Remove the tape which holds the heater to the water or drain line.

Remove the ribbon heater from the water or drain line.
(a) Make a note of the location of the tape on the heater to help with the new heater installation.

CAUTION: INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF RIBBON HEATERS AND INSULATION CAN
_______
CAUSE HEATER FAILURE OR DAMAGE.
DO NOT LET RIBBON HEATERS HAVE AN OVERLAP.
DO NOT INSTALL CLAMPS OR STRAPS FROM PLUMBING INSTALLATIONS OVER RIBBON HEATERS.
SUPPLY 1.0 INCH MINIMUM CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE RIBBON HEATERS AND THE INSULATION. DO NOT INSTALL INSULATION BLANKETS OVER RIBBON HEATERS.
ATTACH RIBBON HEATER TERMINAL BUTTONS WITH TWO LOOPS OF FLAME-RESISTANT ADHESIVE TAPE.
ATTACH ELECTRICAL LEAD WIRES WITH A STRAP.
IF THE HEATER IS TOO LONG, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF WRAPS, BUT DO NOT LET THE HEATER HAVE AN OVERLAP.
(1) Install the ribbon heater:
(a)
Put the ribbon heater in position on the water or drain line.
(b)
Attach one end of the heater with two loops of tape.
(c)
Wind the heater around the water or drain line.
(d)
Put tape along the length of the heater in the same locations as on the heater you removed.
(e)
Find the splice area and make a splice of the electrical leads.

Close the circuit breakers which you opened during the removal procedure.
(3)
Supply electrical power (AMM 24-22-00/201).
(4)
Make sure that the heater becomes warm.

NOTE: If the ambient temperature or the water line temperature is
____ above 45°F (7.2°C), it is necessary to cool the heater thermostat before the heater can become warm.
