 (e)
While you clean, continue to move air through the tank to decrease the steam concentration.

 (f)
Keep to a minimum the time you point the steam at one position. 1) Move the steam through an area at approximately 6 inches

per second. 2) Many fast passes are better than one slow pass.

 (g)
Do not point the steam at the feathered edge of the seal compound. 1) This loosens the joint. 2) Use a spray of approximately 100 psi at the tank surface. 3) If you put heat on the sealant for a long time, you cause

 damage to the sealant.
 S 167-041
 (7)  Use steam to clean the fuel tank.
 (a)
Start at the outboard end of the tank.

 (b)
Point the steam nozzle to the access opening and the drain valve opening.

 (c)
Continue to clean in the direction of the drain valve opening and the access opening.

 (d)
Hold the nozzle at a distance between 6 and 10 inches from the tank surface.

 (e)
Move unwanted material to the inboard end of the tank and out of the openings.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ALL OF THE WASTE PARTICLES CAUSED BY THE
_______ TANK MAINTENANCE. THE UNWANTED MATERIAL CAN CAUSE A BLOCKAGE OF THE THE EJECTOR PUMPS AND STOP THE WATER SCAVENGE SYSTEM.
 (8)  Make sure you removed all the loosened fungus from the fuel tanks.

 (11) Continue to give a good flow of air until the tank is dry.
NOTE: Approximately three hours are necessary to dry the tank
____ fully. Use the same equipment that you used to do the purging procedure.
 S 217-046
 (12) Do a visual check of all the structural surfaces of the fuel tank for corrosion.
 (a)  If you find a light surface corrosion, remove the corrosion from the surface with a wire brush.
CAUTION: IF YOU FIND SOME STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, MAKE SURE YOU REPAIR
_______
IT. A FUEL LEAK CAN EASILY OCCUR.

 (b)  If you cannot fully remove the corrosion with a wire brush, use a mechanical removal procedure (Ref SRM). 1) For example, you can hit the surface with some dry abrasive
glass beads to remove corrosion below the surface.
 S 217-047
 (13)
Look in the fuel tank for areas with a loose corrosion resistant finish (topcoat).

 S 147-048

 (14)
If you find some loose corrosion finish, do these steps to remove it:

 (a)
Remove all the loose finish with a wood or plastic scraper.

 (b)
Clean the structure with a stainless steel brush that turns or with a wire brush that you hold in your hand.

 (c)
Use pressure sensitive tape to do a check for loose finish of the surfaces adjacent to the areas with loose finish. 1) Apply a strip of the pressure sensitive tape to do a test

 of the surface.
