You operate the rod-operated sump drain assembly with a rod attached to the valve. The rod-operated assembly has a thread by which you attach it to the boss of the sump drain valve.
D. It is not necessary to drain the center tank or to remove the sump drain valve to remove the sump drain assembly. The valve assembly is in the keel beam area between the two access doors for the air conditioning bay.

(1) Open the access door for the air conditioning bay to get access to the drain assembly (Ref Chapter 21).
(a) Get access to the valve through the lightening holes in the keel beam.

(2) Remove the parts that attach the drain assembly to the structure.
(a)
Disconnect the bonding jumper from the airplane structure.
(b)
Open the access door for the sump drain on the bottom of the keel beam.
(c)
Remove the bolts and the washers that hold the retaining plate to the lower housing.
(d)
Remove the bolts and the washers that hold the retaining plate to the drain outlet structure.

(e) Remove the retaining plate.

(3) Remove the drain assembly.
(a)
Turn the drain assembly clockwise until it moves freely from the upper housing.
(b)
Lower the drain assembly down in a straight line to remove it.
(c)
Discard the O-rings.
