 ú  I.  Test Results
 ú
 ú  S 757-161
ú  (1) If the test results show the presence of microbial contamination,
ú  get a new fuel/water sample within 10-14 days of test results and
ú  repeat the microbial detection test with the same test method.
 ú
 ú  S 167-162
ú  (2) If the retest also shows heavy microbial contamination, within 10
ú  days after the test results, do these steps:
ú  (a) Remove the microbial growth (AMM 28-11-00/701).
ú  (b) Examine the fuel tank structure for corrosion (SRM Chapter 51).
ú  (c) Do a biocide treatment of the fuel tanks (AMM 28-10-00/201).
ú  (d) After 10 days, get a new fuel/water sample and do the microbial
 ú  detection again.

NOTE: This test is necessary to make sure the microbial growth____

ú  level of microbial contamination to an acceptable level.
 ú
ú  (e) Make a record of the maintenance completed for microbial
 ú  contamination.
 ú
 ú  S 117-163
ú  (3) If the test results show light or medium contamination, do a biocide
ú  treatment of the fuel tanks within 10-14 days after the test results
 ú  (AMM 28-10-00/201).
ú  (a) After 10 days, get a new fuel/water sample and do the
 ú  microbiological detection test again.
 ú

NOTE: This test is necessary to make sure that the biocide____
ú  treatment was successful in reducing the microbial
ú  contamination to an acceptable level.

 3. Fuel Tank Cleaning, Fungus, and Corrosion Removal - With Alcohol
________________________________________________________________
 A. General
CAUTION: DO NOT USE DETERGENTS TO REMOVE FUNGUS FROM THE TANK SURFACES.
_______ THEY WILL CAUSE THE MICROBES AND THE FUNGUS TO INCREASE IN OTHER LOCATIONS.
 (1)
Fungus and microbes become attached to the fuel tank structure in areas where water collects, usually at the bottom surfaces of the tanks. If you do not remove the fungus, corrosion of the fuel tank structure can occur. If you find corrosion, refer to the Structural Repair Manual for the applicable repair procedure (SRM 57-00-00).

 (2)
If the tanks are wet with fuel, the fungus is a black, smooth, moist material. When the tanks are dry, the fungus is a solid material on the tank surfaces. The solid material can have a light brown color when it is dry.

 (3)
There are several methods to remove the microbial growth. If the area that is contaminated is small, you can use alcohol wipes or a fiber brush to remove the growth. If the contamination area is large (manual removal is not practical) you can use a hot water pressure washer to remove the growth. If you use a pressure washer you must remove all of the in-tank FQIS components and use care not to damage the fuel tank sealant. After you finish the procedure make sure the tank is dried and all of the water is removed from the fuel tank.
