M. Repair Fasteners With Metal Seal Covers (If It Is Necessary)

(1) Use a sealant cutting tool to cut around the metal seal cover and below the cover.
(a)
Use the tool to move the sealant away from the structure.
(b)
Hold the metal seal cover with pliers and pull the cover away from the fastener.
NOTE: This usually removes most of the sealant.

(c) Cut and remove the remaining sealant.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove small quantities of
____ sealant that bond tightly to the fastener.

Clean the metal seal covers, the fastener ends, and the structure area with the BMS 11-7 solvent.

(3)
Apply precoat to the area with BMS 5-26, Type II, Class A-2 sealant.
NOTE: Precoat is optional when you use Pro-Seal 860, B 1/6

(a) Apply the precoat smoothly and equally into all of the cracks and the holes.

(4) Do these steps to apply the sealant:
(a)
Fill a metal seal cover, of the correct size and shape, two-thirds full of BMS 5-26, Type II, Class B or Pro-Seal 860, B 1/6 sealant with a sealing gun or a clean spatula (Fig. 813).
(b)
Make sure there is sufficient sealant to be pushed out around the base and through the hole in the top of the metal seal cover.
(c)
Push the sealant in the metal seal cover to make sure there are no remaining holes.
(d)
Push the metal seal cover on the fastener until the metal seal cover touches the structure (Fig. 813).

(e)
Move the sealant that was squeezed out around the top of the metal seal cover.
(f)
Remove the unwanted sealant.
NOTE: Use some clean cheesecloth to rub the sealant
____

(g)
Hold the metal seal cover in its position and move the sealant that was pushed out around the base.
(h)
Keep the metal seal cover on the center of the fastener.
(i)
Do not permit the metal seal cover to move.
(j)
If there is not sufficient clearance with adjacent metal seal covers, structures, or fillet seals, you can remove a maximum of 25 percent of the area around the metal seal cover.
(k)
Make sure the metal seal cover has the dimensions shown in Fig. 814.
(l)
If it is necessary, do this Task: Application of Corrosion Resistant Finish (Topcoat) (AMM 28-11-00/701).
NOTE: A layer of corrosion resistant finish is necessary
____ only to protect bare (anodized) metal. It is not necessary to apply a layer of corrosion resistant finish on sealant. Corrosion resistant finish can be applied on sealant, but it is not necessary. Usually topcoat is applied to sealant only when it must be applied to protect adjacent bare metal.
