Examine the external leak area regularly for one hour.


 NOTE: You can monitor the leak area for a longer time to make
____ sure the leak area is OK. If the leak was a stain or a seep, it can be necessary to monitor the leak area for a longer time to make sure you repaired the leak.

 (3)  If you repaired a fastener, you can use the vacuum cup, ST8744, (Fig. 611) to make sure it does not have a leak.
 (a)  
Attach a vacuum source (10 psi, 69 kPa) to the vacuum cup.

 (b)  
Put the vacuum cup on the fastener that you repaired.

 (c)  
Apply the vacuum pressure (10 psi, 69 kPa).

 (d)  
If no bubbles or other leak indications occur, you repaired the fastener correctly.

 (4)  Make sure there are no fuel leaks.
 NOTE: Make sure the leakage area is maintained, at a minimum
____ to the leakage limits shown in Figure 603 after the 1 hour inspection.

 3. Alternative Procedures for Fuel Tank Leak Detection
___________________________________________________
 A. General
 (1)  
The best leak detection procedure is usually to find the leak externally with talcum powder and then to find the internal leak with the air pressure and soap bubble procedure ("backblowing"). That procedure is given in the above task: Leak Detection and Repair.

 (2)  
This task contains alternative procedures used to find a leak. These procedures can be used if backblowing is not possible, or if it fails to show all of the leaks. This task also contains the internal pressure and bubble procedure which can be used to find external leak locations after an airplane is defueled. These are the procedures:

 (a)  
Pressure Box Application

 (b)  
Dye Injection Procedure

 (c)  
Internal Pressure and Bubble Procedure

 (d)  
The hollow bolt procedure (for use in areas of complex structure)

 (e)  
The hollow bolt and dye injection procedure.

 

 (3)  
Before you defuel a fuel tank which has a leak, try to find all of the leaks in the fuel tank. Repair all leaks each time a fuel tank is defueled to repair leaks.

Air supply - 0 to 10 psig (0 to 69 kPa)


 CAUTION: ATTACH RED COTTON WEBBING STREAMERS TO ALL PLUGS AND CLOSURE
_______ ITEMS USED IN THE TANKS. THE PLUGS AND CLOSURE ITEMS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE THEM BEFORE FLIGHT.
