 INTEGRAL FUEL TANKS - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1.  General
_______
 A.  This procedure has these tasks:
 (1)  
To find and repair a leak in a fuel tank.

 (2)  
Alternative procedures to find fuel tank leakage.

 (3)  
Leak path analysis.

 (4)  
Fuel Leak Detection and Repair Aids


 B.  More data about the repair of integral fuel tanks is in AMM 28-11-00/801.
 C.  If the cause of the fuel leak is a result of structural damage, do the structural repair. Refer to the Structural Repair Manual before you apply the sealant.
 D.  If there is indication of damage to the secondary fuel barrier, you must find and repair the leakage in the fuel tank and in the secondary fuel barrier (AMM 28-11-00/801) before the airplane can be released for flight.
 NOTE: The most usual indication of such damage is a report of fuel
____
 fumes in the passenger cabin.

 2.  Fuel Tank Leak Detection and Repair

 A.  General
 (1)  
This task has these procedures:

 (a)  
Do an Analysis of the Fuel Leak Type

 (b)  
Find External Leaks with Talcum Powder

 (c)  
Use the Backblowing Procedure to Find the Internal Leaks

 (d)  
Repair the Internal Leaks

 (e)  
Close the Repaired Fuel Tank

 

 (2)  
There are four types of fuel leakage. These types are in a sequence that tells you how important they are to flight safety. The types are stains, seeps, heavy seeps, running leaks.


 B.  Equipment
 (1)  ST8744 - vacuum cup, to find bad fasteners (optional)

Tools - for sealant removal and application (Fig. 605, 607).

 (3)  
Brushes - to apply the precoat and the primer (corrosion resistant finish)

 (4)  
Markers - non-lead, Berol filmograph to mark in the tank, Berol hydromarker to mark out of the tank (or equivalent)

 (5)  
Source - air pressure, 100 psi (689 kPa) maximum

 (6)  
Source - vacuum, 10 psi (69 kPa) (optional)

 (7)  
Flashlight - Explosion-proof

 (8)  
Pads - unsterilized, gauze, must have less than 0.75 percent oil

 (9)  
Gloves - neoprene or rubber (commercially available)

 (10)
 Gun - to apply sealant (optional)


 C. Consumable Materials
 (1)  
A00701 - BMS 5-26 Type II, Class A sealant, for the precoat

 (2)  
A00702 - BMS 5-26, Type II, Class B, to apply with a spatula or sealant gun

 (3)  
Alternative sealants:


 (a)  A00706 - Sealant, PR1826, Class B-1/2 or B-1/4, dark grey, available in 6 ounce semkits with primer.
 NOTE: Use with PR-1826 adhesion promoter.

 (b)  A00706 - Sealant, PR1828, Class B-1/2 or B-1/4, white, available in 6 ounce semkits.
 NOTE: Use with PR-186 adhesion promoter on polysulfide
____
 sealants.

 (4)  
Use one of these approved solvents to prepare surfaces before the application of sealant:

 (a)  
B00148 - solvent, Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)

 (b)  
B00096 - Dowclene EC, Dow Chemical Company

 (c)  
B00300 - 1,1,1-Trichloroethane

 (d)  
B00634 - Solvent - Citra Safe, Inland Technology, Inc.

 

 (5)  
G00835 - soap solution for leak detection (or equivalent)
