INTEGRAL FUEL TANKS - CLEANING/PAINTING
_______________________________________ ú
1. General
_______
A. Microbes or fungus are the usual cause of structural corrosion of the fuel tank. They also cause deterioration of the components in the fuel tank. The microbes and fungus increase in number at the interface of the fuel and the water. To prevent this problem, decrease the quantity of water or remove all of the water kept in the tanks.
B. This procedure has these tasks: ú (1) A detection test for microbial contamination.
(2)
A task to clean the fuel tanks with steam and to remove corrosion and fungus.
(3)
A task to clean the fuel tanks with alcohol and remove corrosion and fungus
(4)
A task to apply corrosion resistant finish.
(5)
A task to keep and mix the corrosion resistant finish correctly.
(6) A task to permit the corrosion resistant finish to cure correctly. ú ú TASK 28-11-00-287-087 ú2. Detection Test for Microbial Contamination
__________________________________________
A. General ú (1) The corrosion caused by the growth of micro-organisms can be a ú serious problem. These micro-organisms, thriving at the interface ú of turbine fuel and any trapped water, are fed with the hydrocarbons ú of fuel and mineral salts of water. They produce deposits with ú corrosive action, which have the appearance of slime and vary in ú color from grayish-white, when dry, to muddish-brown or black, when ú wet with fuel or water. ú (2) Fuel/water samples taken from each fuel tank should be tested with a ú microbial contamination kit. Positive results for microbial ú contamination require action which can include a biocide treatment ú or physical removal of microbial growth from fuel tanks. ú (3) All instructions supplied with the detection kits should be followed ú closely. Variations in the fuel/water sample and the ability of the ú detection kits to consistently measure the level of microbial growth ú make it important to retest if a detection test shows microbial ú contamination. Do not compare the test results between the ú different types of detection kits. ú B. Equipment ú (1) Microbial Contamination Test Kits, ú Use one of these: ú (a) MicrobMonitor2 ú Hemel Hempstead, UK ú Tel: +44 (0) 1442 225711 ú Fax: +44 (0) 1442 223960 ú Email: microbmonitor2@bp.com
