3-6 NGA CATALOG OF MAPS, CHARTS AND RELATED PRODUCTS, PART 1, VOLUME I -
This catalog is a loose leaf publication, which provides a complete listing of NGA aeronautical charts, DoD Flight Information Publications, and miscellaneous items available to DoD users. It includes indices of available items together with descriptive information for each item and requisitioning procedures, as well as publications produced by other agencies which are available for DoD usage (such as ICAO documents). The Defense Logistics Agency produces a softcopy version of this catalog on CD-ROM every 30 days; it replaces all hard copy or paper catalogs and can be ordered at http://www.dscr.dla.mil/PC9/. The NGA Catalog is also available on CD ROM. NRM: CATCDLIMDIS. NSN: 7644-01-478-4783.
3-7 DIGITAL AERONAUTICAL FLIGHT INFORMATION FILE (DAFIF) -The DAFIF provides worldwide digital flight information selected from the DoD Flight Information Publications (FLIP). The DAFIF is used for existing and developing automated applications such as flight planning systems, flight simulators and flight management computer systems (mission computers).
a. The following digital flight information is contained in the DAFIF:
(1)
Airports

(2)
Runways

(3)
Arresting Systems

(4)
Navigational Aids

(5)
Airways

(6)
Airway Intersections, Reporting Points

(7)
Special Use Airspace

(8)
Controlled Airspace Boundaries

(9)
Air Refueling Routes

(10) Military Training Routes
(11)
Terminal Procedures (Standard Instrument Departures, Standard Terminal Arrivals and Instrument Approach Procedures)

(12)
Preferred Routes

(13)
Parachute Jump Areas

b.
The following Flight Information Publications are contained on the DAFIF CD/ROM in portable document format (.pdf):

(1)
Enroute Supplements

(2)
Planning Documents

(3)
Flight Information Handbook

c.
The output media is CD/ROM updated every 28 days. The following standard outputs are available:

(1)
Full file high and low altitude data

(2)
Navigational aids only

(3)
Transaction high and low (changes to previous full-file)

3-8 CAUTION - Digital Data Integrity and DoD Pilot Procedures. While the DoD migrates towards Digital Instrument Approaches, digital display of Traditional Paper FLIP, MFD/FMS integration of instrument approach procedures (IAPs) and Laptop/Portable Display of FLIP products, there are concerns that aircrew should know and consider.
The ongoing digital migration effort is emerging technology; as a result, digital products can have errors that are not immediately identified (much like traditional paper FLIP). Thus users, i.e. a pilot flying an approach with digital database driven FMS could be first to discover an error. Presently there is not a defined process in place to notify the TERPsters and/or NGA of the error.
DoD operators should continue to use Traditional Paper FLIP and refer to it as the standard for comparison. If your aircraft or unit allows DAFIF derived IAPs for mission planning or simulator use, always crosscheck the DAFIF IAPs against paper FLIP to ensure accuracy. To report errors follow the instructions in Chapter 11, para 11-2 and 11-3. Send an email to the appropriate agency, NGA, AFFSA, NAVFIG or USAASA. Anyone can submit quality inputs to NGA at quality@nga.mil.
When using non DoD digital databases, notify the appropriate producer to report errors.

3-9 NEW IAP CHART FORMAT AND RNAV CHART MINIMA -
a. New IAP Chart Format. A new format for instrument approach procedure (IAP) charts has been developed by the United States Government. This new IAP format was found to be easier to read and resulted in reduced “head-down” time by pilots referring to the chart during approach. The implementation plan calls for the conversion to be done airport by airport. This will result in both old and new formats being mixed, but with all IAP charts for any particular airport in a common format. Eventually, all IAP charts will be in the new format.
