3-2 PLANNING PUBLICATIONS - The FLIP Planning has been designed primarily for desk use and not for carrying in the aircraft. Authorization has been granted, however, for its use aboard aircraft in instances where major commands have stated a requirement for its use on specific missions, or for its use by all or some aircrews under their jurisdiction in areas where the publication may not be readily available at Base Operations offices.
a. A complete FLIP Planning for the entire area of coverage is comprised of sections as listed below. An area of coverage chart is on the back cover of all planning documents.
(1)
GENERAL PLANNING (GP) - Published every 32 weeks with Planning Change Notices (PCNs) issued at the 16 week mid-point of the GP book cycle, and Urgent Change Notices (UCNs) issued as required. This section contains general information on all Flight Information Publications, terms, explanation of the divisions of United States Airspace, Flight Plans and Codes, common worldwide pilot procedures, ICAO procedures, Operations and Firings over the High Seas and Aviation Weather Codes.

AREA PLANNING (AP/1, 2, 3 and 4) - AP/1, 2 and 3 are published every 24 weeks with Planning Change Notices (PCNs) at the 8 and 16 week intervals. AP/4 is published every 48 weeks with PCNs at the 16 and 32 week intervals. Urgent Change Notices (UCNs) are published as required. These documents contain planning and procedure information for a specific region or geographic area.

AREA PLANNING (AP/1A, 2A, 3A and 4A) (SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE) - Published every 8 weeks, digitally only. Urgent Change Notices (UCNs) are published as required. These documents contain all Prohibited, Restricted, Danger, Warning


and Alert Areas listed by country. Military Operations and known Parachute Jumping Areas are also listed.
(4) AREA PLANNING (AP/1B) (MILITARY TRAINING ROUTES, NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA) - Published every 8 weeks. It contains information relative to military routes, including IFR Military Training Routes (IR), VFR Military Training Routes (VR), Slow Speed Low Altitude Training Routes (SR), Refueling Tracks/Anchors/VFR Helicopter Refueling Tracks (AR), and avoidance locations. Charts (7 charts on 4 sheets) containing graphic depictions of the IR, VR and SR route systems throughout the United States and Alaska are also included.


3-3 FLIGHT INFORMATION HANDBOOK -
This handbook contains aeronautical information required by DoD aircrews in flight, but which is not subject to frequent change. Sections include information on Emergency Procedures, FLIP and NOTAM Abbreviation/Codes, National and International Flight Data and Procedures, Meteorological Information, Conversion Tables, and Standard Time Signals. The handbook is designed for worldwide use in conjunction with DoD FLIP Enroute Supplements. Publication cycle is every 32 weeks.
3-4 ENROUTE AND TERMINAL PUBLICATIONS - These publications are designed to provide radio navigation, departure, airway structure, letdown, approach and landing information for use during the in-flight phase of IFR Operations. A brief description is given below of each publication listed under its specific area of the world. The publications are updated by Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), Enroute Change Notices (ECNs) or Terminal Change Notices (TCNs) on an issue basis as indicated below, or by Urgent Change Notices (UCNs) as required.
a. UNITED STATES

ENROUTE LOW ALTITUDE CHARTS - These charts portray the airway system and related data required for IFR Operations at altitudes below 18,000 feet Mean Sea Level. Thirty-six variable scale charts are printed on eighteen sheets, L-1 through L-36, covering the entire United States. Publication cycle is every 8 weeks.

AREA CHARTS - These charts portray the airway system and related data required for IFR Operations in selected terminal areas at altitudes below 18,000 feet Mean Sea Level. Twelve variable scale charts are printed on one sheet. Publication cycle is every 8 weeks. See the new IAP Chart Format and RNAV chart minima at the end of this chapter.
