3. Description
___________
A. Smoke Detectors (Ref. Fig. 002A) The smoke detector operates on the principle of scattered light. The light source, the labyrinth and the photocell are set out in a horizontal plane so that the photocell cannot receive light. But when there is smoke, the smoke particles reflect and scatter a part of the light beam. The photocell receives this light and gives an analog signal and sets off the alarm.

B. Smoke Detection Control Unit (SDCU) 10WQ The SDCU has two channels, which make it a fail-safe unit. The system will operate normally if one channel fails. The Built In Test Equipment (BITE) detects and isolates failures in the SDCU. It also makes sure that the smoke detectors function correctly. Most of the system functions are monitored continuously. The line key switch (on the Centralized Fault Display System (CFDS) and the Multifunction Control and Display Unit (MCDU)) simulates a smoke condition when pressed. Information of faulty equipment is signaled to the CFDS.

B. Smoke Detection Function The CIDS part of the CIDS director controls the lavatory smoke detection function. The Lavatory smoke detectors are connected via a CAN bus to a DEU B and linked to the CIDS director via the CIDS middle line bus.

C. Smoke Warning Facilities
Smoke warnings are given in the cockpit and the cabin. The cockpit
warnings are:
-
a repetetive chime,
-
a red master warning light,
-
a smoke warning indication on the ECAM upper display unit.
The cabin warnings are:
-
a triple chime of approx. 392 Hz from all cabin loudspeakers with a repetetive time of approx. 30 s,
-an amber flashing light on the respective Area Call Panel (ACP),
-a common red lavatory smoke indicator on the FWD attendant panel. (Ref. Fig. 003)
