R A. Smoke Detectors 3WH, 4WH, 5WH and 6WH (Ref. Fig. 003).
R The smoke detectors ionize the air particles that pass between their
R electrodes. As smoke has a higher specific gravity than air, it causes
R the electrical resistance of the circuit to increase. The current
R decreases and the voltage in the measurement chamber increases to a
R higher level than the reference chamber. At a set difference level the
R detector sends a signal. The reference chamber makes allowances for
R differential pressure. It makes sure that the detector operates on the
R ground and in flight within the same level of sensitivity.
R
R B. Smoke Annunciator Light 12WH
R The AFT SMOKE annunciator light 12WH is installed on the cargo smoke
R panel 22VU. When any set of smoke detectors operate, they transmit a
R warning signal to the SDCU 10WQ. The SDCU through two ARINC 429 buses
R independently control the warning outputs to the Flight Warning Computers
R (FWC). The AFT SMOKE annunciator light comes on.
R
R C. Press-to-Test (PTT) pushbutton switch 13WH
R The (PTT) pushbutton switch together with the SDCU, permits a functional
R test of the cargo smoke detection system. The (PTT) pushbutton switch is
R installed on the cargo smoke panel 22VU.
R
R D. Smoke Detection Control Unit (SDCU) 10WQ
R The SDCU controls the lavatory and cargo-compartment smoke-detection
R system. The SDCU Built-In Test Equipment (BITE) controls and monitors the
R systems and interfaces with the Centralized Fault Display System (CFDS).
R It records the unsatisfactory components and system malfunctions (Ref.
R 26-17-00).
