POWER PLANT - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES (THREE ENGINE FERRY FLIGHT)
_______________________________________________________________
1. General
_______
A. This section contains two tasks to prepare an engine, which does not operate, to be ferried on a 3 engine flight. This section also contains two tasks to put the engine back to the condition it was in before it was ferried.
B. To ferry an engine, you must do one of these tasks:
(1)
Prepare to ferry the engine - engine windmilling (Ref par. 2).
(2)
Prepare to ferry engine - locked rotors (Ref par. 3).
C.
To put the engine back to its condition before it was ferried, you must do the applicable tasks:
(1)
Put the engine back to its pre-ferry flight condition - engine windmilling (Ref par. 4).
(2)
Put the engine back to its pre-ferry flight condition - locked rotor (Ref par. 5).
D.
For the engine windmilling procedure, you must do the engine checks and precautions to make sure that the windmilling will not cause more engine damage. You must use the locked rotor procedure if the engine windmilling will cause more damage to the engine.
(1)
The engine checks include:
-
the visual check for the engine damage
-
the check of the rotor for the free rotation
-
the check of the main oil filter
-
the check of the probes on the magnetic chip detector for the No. 1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 bearings.
(2)
The precautions include:
-
the deactivation of the thrust reversers
-
the full oil level in the engine oil tank
-
the boost pump pressure at the fuel pump inlet.
E.
For the locked rotor procedure, you lock the N1 and N2 rotors, and the actuator for the 2.5 bleed valves in the closed position.
(1)
To lock the N1 rotor, you remove the inlet cone and fan blades. You install a fiberglass cover around the fan rotor hub to make sure that air does not go into the primary air inlet. The cover is held to the blade root slots of the fan rotor hub and to the fan exit fairing. You must then install the inlet cone. With the cover installed, the N1 rotor is locked.
