3. TestingEmergencyLocator Transmitter
The transmitter operateson emergency frequenciesof 121.5 and 243.0 mHz.Both frequencies are monitored by various FAAinstallations.BeforeperforminganyELT operational tests, the followingprecautionsmust be observed:
ConductELT testing in a screen roomor metal enclosure electromagnetic
to ensure energyis not radiated. If a shielded enclosureis not available, the following precautionsmustbe adhered to:
NOTE: For detailed informationconcerningELT testing, consult FAA Advisory Circular,AC 20-81.
(a)
Do not test longer thanthreeaudiosweeps.

(b)
Use a dummy load as a substituteif the antenna isremoved.

(c)
Testingof the ELT must only be conducted during the first five minutes after any hour.

(d)
If the operationaltests must be conducted at a time other than five minutes after the hour, the test must be coordinated with the nearest FAAtower or flight service station.

To conduct test, proceed as follows:
(a)
Remove access panel or cover to gain transmitteraccess.

(b)
Turnmaster switch ON.

(c)
SwitchreceiverON and tune to 121.5 mHz. Deactivatesquelchand turn up volume untilslight backgroundnoisecan be heard.

NOTE: If the aircraft is not fitted with a communication receiver, request that the tower listen for your test.
switch to ON position. Keep switch ON for a few seconds, then set to OFF (or ARM ifOFF does not exist). Returnto ARM position.
(d) On transmitter, setthe ON/ARM/OFF
NOTE: The test transmission should be picked up by the aircraft communications receiveror controltower. Duringcold weather, therecould be a slight delaybefore transmission occurs.
(e)
A properly functioningtransmittermustemit a characteristicdownwardswepttone.

(f)
Whentest is completed, besure transmitter ON/ARM/OFFswitchis in the ARM position.

(g)
Placeaccesspanel on dorsalfin at station 321.0 andsecurewithscrews.

the transmitter switchfromARM

to ON, the switch must be put in the OFFpositionbeforegoing back to ARM. Under
normal conditions, thetransmitterswitch must be setto ARM.
NOTE: Inspectthe external whip antenna forany damage. Avoidbendingthe whip. Any sharply bent or kinked whipmustbe replaced. Antennadamagemaycausestructural failure of whip in flight.
NOTE:Whencheckingthe ELT by alternating ON/ARM/OFF
4. Pilot'sRemote Switch
NOTE: Under normal conditions, the remote switch mustbe set to ARM.
The pilot's remote switch, locatedonthe overhead switch panel, is provided so the transmitter can be controlled frominside the cabin. The switch is locked into eachposition. To move the switch, the toggle must be pulledout and movedto the new position. The pilot's remoteswitchis positionedto ON and ARM(NORMALPOSITION).The switch is normally left in the down or ARM position.Toturn the transmitter off, move theswitchto the ON position for one secondandthen return it to the ARMposition.Toactuatethetransmitterfor tests orother reasons, movetheswitch upwardto the ON position.Leaveit in that position aslongas transmission is desired.
