The Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder System (CVR) provides a record of four separate voice
inputs. These inputs may be either transmitted or received signalsoriginating from the following
stations: Pilot, Copilot, Public Address or Third Crew Member and Cockpit Area Microphone.
TheCVR is a modular systemcomposed of a minimum of two essential modules, the recorder and
the control unit. The recorder, model A100A, is housed in an international orange, 1/2 ATR short
case. It contains the recorder assembly and associated electronics, located in the aft baggage
compartment.The control unit is a standard ARINC characteristic306 panel format. Model A152B
house microphone pre-amplifier, microphone, test switch, erase switch and meter, located on the
centerinstrumentpanel.
Theerase feature is a bulk erase function. When activated on the ground, this function will completelyeraseall data from the tape. The units normal mode of operationis self erasing whileit is recording.
2. Removal of CVR Unit
The CVR control unit is mounted on the center instrument panelutilizing four dzus fasteners.
(a)
Unlockthe fasteners and lift the control headfree of the panel.

(b)
Remove the electrical connection.


The CVR recorder unit located behind the aft baggage compartmentwithin the pressurized vessel, may be removed by:
(a)
Removingthe recorder cover.

(b)
Loosen the wing lock nuts and remove unit.


3. Installation of CVR Unit
The CVR recorder unit
(a)
Insert unit and tightenwing lock nuts.

(b)
Replace recorder cover.

The CVR control unit

(a)
Reconnectelectricalconnections.

(b)
Placecontrol head in panel and lock fasteners.


4. Testing
Functional test of the CVR unit:
(a) Push and hold "TEST" button located on the Cockpit Control Unitfor a minimum of five seconds.A 600 hertz generator is keyed and sequentially switchedthroughthe four channels of the recorder. Each channelreceivesthe test tone for approximately 0.8 seconds. Themeter circuitreceivesthese signals anddrives the meter, a "GO-NO-GO" indicatingdevice,located on the Cockpit Control Unit. The meter needlerises and comes to rest in the "GO" (green) section of the meter scale.

Becauseof the short time intervalbetweeneach channel beingfed the testtone, the meter needle
rises to an indicationbut does notcompletelyfall to a zero indicationbetweensignals,givingmore
of an oscillating actionor a slight ditheringaction.In the eventof a channel failure, the meter
needlewillreturn to zero andgivea definite "NO-GO"indication.
(b) Auralmonitoringof the 600 hertz test tone and channelswitchingcan be accomplished
with a 600 ohm headsetinsertedintothe jack locatedonthe Cockpit controlUnit.
Withthe headset insertedinto the jack located onthe Cockpit controlUnit,speakin a normal voice6 inches away from the CockpitControl Unit microphoneandnotethat you can hearwhat youspeak with approximately distortion.Thistest
a 1/2 second delaywithoutanysignificant ensuresthe microphone is operating.
The test procedure shouldbeperformedduringthe Event inspectioncyclesand replaced at
4,500hour intervals. (Referto 5-50-00)
