A. Descriptionand Operation
Electricalpoweris supplied by a 28-volt, directcurrent,negativegroundelectrical system incorporating a 24-volt nickel-cadmiumbattery furnishing powerforstarting,and as a reserve power source in case of generator failure. An external power receptacle is also providedin the nose of the airplane for auxiliarypowerduringcold weather operationsor whenever externalpoweris required to start the engines.
The electricalsystem is controlled by three rockertype switches: the battery masterswitch,right startergeneratorswitch, and left starter generator switch. Theseswitches are located on an overhead paneljust above the windshield betweenthe pilot and copilot seats. The battery masterswitch controls a master contactor whichconnectsthe battery to the tie bus. Both generators providepower to this bus and can be switched individually on or off the system.
The PA-42-720has two 300-amp, 28-voltgenerators,whichprovide the startingfunctionfor the engines. Overvoltage and overloadprotectionis provided withinthe system, with two circuit breaker panelslocatedon the right and left side panels of the cockpit.

CAUTION: THE SELECTOR SWITCH SHOULD NOT BE LEFT IN THE START POSITION ANY LONGER THAN THE TIME REQUIRED FOR A NORMAL ENGINE START; OTHERWISE, THE UNIT MAY BE DAMAGED BY EXCESSIVE TEMPERATURES CAUSED BY THE LARGE STARTING CURRENTS IF A NORMAL START IS NOT EFFECTED.
